Hifi sound distortion problems

I'm the owner of an Aiwa NSX-V710 mini hi-fi and have been very pleased with it until now, but just recently the sound has become very crackly. I'm also experiencing periodic hisses and popping sounds. I was just wondering if anyone had any idea why it would have started to do this. The problem occurs no matter what I'm using the system for - whether I'm playing a CD, listening to the radio or I'm using the auxiliary setting to use the hi-fi in conjunction with my PC. Is there anything I can do to fix this myself without sending it to the repair shop? Hope someone can offer some advice. Thanks.

did you look at all the connections? it may be a loose connection somewhere between the amplifier and the speakers. how old is it? its possible that some of the speaker components could have gone bad, as well.

this means its either the amplifier, speakers, cabling, or the preamp section.
check your speaker wiring, if you have a short, you may have damaged your amplifier, or a cable might be loose. does it happen at all volumes? you could have a dirty volume control pot.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've checked the cables and they're all fine. It's about 2 years old btw and hasn't been moved or dropped recently. Is there anything I can check by opening it up myself? What should I be looking for?

like flood said, if you open it up, look for loose or dirty connections like the volume knob connection or any contacts. there may be a corroded surface that needs either cleaning or a good scraping (with emery cloth or a dremel). good luck!

actually, if its a dirty pot, you wont see it since it would be inside the pot.
is there a volume range where you have the problems? does it go away at high or very low volumes?
