Hiding topic summaries

Is there any way to not display topic summaries? I really find very little use for them, since the subject of a thread should clearly convey its contents in the first place. They tend to just clutter up the screen.
 
Also, the ability to hide the list of forum categories on the left would be nice. I would much rather devote my screen real estate to widening the "Subject" column in thread view, to prevent subject titles from wrapping around to a 2nd line on the screen. When viewing threads in For Sale / Trade, this happens frequently and it makes the screen extremely cluttered.
 
The only way that I know to remove the topic summaries is by using a modified CSS file with Firefox (at least that's how I do it).
