Hiding IP address...

Is it possible to hide or change your IP address online? For example, to be able to view a web site without the site knowing your IP address. Can it be done? How?

That's like asking how you can get a package delivered to your house without giving the sender your address, it's not possible.

You can possibly change your IP, depending on your ISP's addressing policies but that doesn't really matter because they'll still have the records stating that you had that IP at that time.

there is software such as Hide IP Platinum that routes you threw proxies throughout the world. when i have this enabled and go to google, it loads Google china or whatever country the proxy is located in.

this isnt an end-all however, because even with this enabled my ISP address was still displayed in game servers, irc, etc. could be a viable solution if your just looking for web though...

And your IP can still be logged by all of the intermediary proxies so while it would be harder to track the traffic back to you, it is still possible.

true, but it sounds like he was just blocked by ip from a website / forum. this wouldn?t provide any guaranteed anominimity, but it may work for what he?s trying to accomplish.

LOL.

Why TheNiceGuy needs to hide?

You --- the address that you go to ------ ISP -------- Destination address.

The destination sees the IP assigned to you by your ISP.

You --- the address that you go to ------ ISP -------- IP Proxy ---- Destination address.

The destination sees the Proxy?s IP.

The difference.

Method 1 only the ISP has to be subpoena.

Method 2 the ISP and Proxy have to be subpoena.

Result for you, the same.

Check out Tor. Similar idea to a proxy server, but it randomly passes your requests through multiple random servers.
What does it matter whether the IP was chosen specifically or at random?

Each public Internet IP is registered to an Internet user who legally owns it and thus can always be traced.

Exactly, now the nice guy can't surf porn anymore

Best bet is to get a WiFi card and logon to somebody else's access point or a free one at a local coffee shop or whatever. Even more anonymous would be to spoof somebody else's MAC address and make sure your computer name isn't anything that can identify you (ie. having your computer name your name). They can still track the IP to that location so doing this on a neighbor's network is not the best idea. Also, don't forget to purge the router logs if it is a private router (most people who don't protect their wireless network also don't change their router login and password from the default). Happy paranoid surfing!

Agreed. But it makes it much more difficult to be traced. You are also passing through multiple onion routers making it much more difficult to locate the connection originator. Also, all packets are encrypted except the ones that are sent to and from the true destination.

It is not infallible, but it is much harder to reveal the originator in an onion network than a single proxy server.
