Hi, I'm trying to hide a NTFS partition on my computer so that the other users can't see it... How can you do that?

I would also like to know how to make a folder private in that partition...

I dont know about hiding it, but with proper permissions you can deny access to most people.

You can open a DOS window and use the ATTRIB commands to hide a partition, folder, or file. The ATTRIB commands are:

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
C:\WINDOWS>attrib /?
Displays or changes file attributes.
ATTRIB [+R | -R] [+A | -A ] [+S | -S] [+H | -H] [drive:][path][filename]
[/S [/D]]
+ Sets an attribute.
- Clears an attribute.
R Read-only file attribute.
A Archive file attribute.
S System file attribute.
H Hidden file attribute.
[drive:][path][filename]
Specifies a file or files for attrib to process.
/S Processes matching files in the current folder
and all subfolders.
/D Processes folders as well.

Yeah well with that way, he can still go in Tools->Folders Options->View->Show Hidden Files and Folders... Or maybe I am wrong..?

I dont know about hiding it, but with proper permissions you can deny access to most people.

Do I need to encrypt the data first like in the Andy's FAQ about EFS??? Is there a HOWTO for setting up permissions correctly??

Tweak UI v2.0 will let you hide and unhide partitions quickly and easily in My Computer, if that's where you want to hide it. It comes as a part of Powertoys for Windows XP, which Microsoft has pulled from their site and it's remained unavailable from them for months. While Tweak UI v1.33 is currently available, it's interface doesn't blend with XP as smoothly. Also, Powertoys includes Power Toy Calculator (Scientific), Slide Show Wizard and Timer Shot.

Here's where you can get

Powertoys For Windows XP

Ok I've tryed your Powertools... Now when I hide the partition, it only hides it in my account!!!!

If I go in the other user account wich is a Limited account, I can still see that partition. So I tryed to hide it with PowerTools from that user account BUT, since it's a Limited account, I can't do this!!!

Any other ideas???

If you use ATTRIB in a DOS window to hide your folder/drive it will be invisible to everyone. Those are old DOS commands and very few Windows only users even know there is a DOS window available to them. If they somehow got the DOS window to open they would not know what to do in it. Only us old DOS persons know much about the DOS window and usable commands.</FONT>

You are correct but not many know about that. Only the real computer hackers even have a clue about how to show hidden files. Even when selecting to view hidden files in Windows guess what? There are still many hidden files you cannot see. Some people call those super hidden files.

To hide a partition in Win2k.

1. Start Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management
2. Select Storage\Disk Management
3. Right Click on the partition u want to hide
4. Select "Drive Letter And path" from popup mnu
5. In the dialog box, select the Drive Letter from the list and click remove ...

(I am not sure if you need to restart the machine. Normally if you touch windows' settings, you have to restart it :)

Thanks johnlog and also hasu, but I think the Hide should have been replace by block... Because, I don't want to unhide my partition each time I want to have access to it...

Anyway that great info! Tkx

Yeah well, the other user knows that trick.. Maybe there's a lot of people not knowing this, but I find it a very unsecure way to hide a partition....

Well since hiding wasn't really what I was looking for...sorry guys, and since n0monckey spoke about permissions, someone told me about setting up correctly permissions... Wich can be found here---> HOWTO ... In fact the only thing I needed was To display the Security tab at the very bottow of the page... But I didn't know that it was possible so hey! how could I ask for this.. :p

Anyway tkx all

GeSuN are you the only admin for this box... if so then no one can access your documents folder even if they are power users. If they also have admin access then any permissions you set up can be overwritten by other admins.

am I missing something.

No problem at all if you can remember the name of the hidden folder or partition. You can log onto it anytime you wish to. When it is hidden using ATTRIB it has not been disconnected or removed from your system.

In a DOS window to see the partition name just type "CD \name" and you are in it and can do anything you wish to.

No point in that now because you found how to do it as the Adminstrator.

I don't want to use DOS to access my partition, even if I know DOS enough to be able to do everything I need to do. I want to access my partition from Explorer... That's why using permissions is my best solution.
