Hidden Shares on Vista?

Hello,

I'm used to just using Hidden Shares - e.g. C$ for the C drive to access drivs on my XP machine - no need to create shares. When trying to go the the hidden shares on my vista machine from my XP machine, it prompted me for user id and password but wouldn't let me get there, kept prompting. It would do the same for the share I created, prompt fo ruser id and password but let me into the share.

Does Vista still have hidden shares? How do I access them?

"Windows XP by default created administrative shares for the fixed drives of the computer. For example, for the C: drive on the computer named BobPC, Windows XP automatically shared \\bobpc\c$. The ?$? at the end of the share name means that the share name will not appear in the list of shares. With Windows Vista, these administrative shares are not shared by default for security reasons. You can create your own shares to share your drives from the root of the drive, but Microsoft highly recommends that you share only the folders that you need to, rather than the entire drive."

Good to know. A shame, but good to know.

It's not a shame at all, its a change most of wanted for security reasons. Default admin shares are evil 😉 It will take you about 2 seconds to enable them (just add the $ to the share name if you want them to not show while browsing)
