Hey,

Thanks to everyone who helped me figure out how to create (or rather access) the hidden root share created by XP Pro.

I've tired to do the same thing in XP Home on my laptop.

So far I've

Created the Share

Set
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa Force Guest = 0

The Admin account has a password

All PC's on the network still refuse to connect to the share. I don't even get as far as a login screen.

The share shows under computer managment.

Any Ideas?

How are you trying to access the share? What do you mean you created the share? It should already have been created by default.

I can access my default shares with no registry modifications by start-->run-->\\computername\c$

I will then get a prompt for a username and password.

That's what I've tired. I found that on my laptop these shares are NOT created by default. I belive that this is because it has XP Home. I shared the C Drive as C$.

When I attempt to connect I get an error message and no login screen.

I can connect to other shares on the laptop

The error message is "Windows cannot find the \\computername\c$. Check the spelling and try again, or try searching for the item by clicking the Start button then clicking search"

Since I can reach other shares on the PC I'm pretty sure Network Sharing is on and the Firewall excption is on.

I don't think you can create a share called c$ or any drivename$ because they are reserved for Windows.......

try creating another share at the root of C with a $ and try it like root$

I'll give that a try when I get home but I have a feeling it won't help.

I checked the current shares under Computer Managment and It only show'd the one's I'd created, No Hidden Systems shares for each drive like my XP Pro systems. I assumed this was because it was XP Home.

I get a different error message if i enter the path in the run dialogue.

Error Message: The network path was not found.

Ok, Now things get stranger. If I create the share it will show in Computer Manager. Upon rebooting the share is gone! I'm tempted just to install XP Home, I know i've got an extra liscence sitting around here somewhere.

Looks like it's gonna be XP PRO. I can't seem to set share permission in XP Home. Does XP Home only support simple file sharing?
