From beginning to end this movie was laughably bad. I did finish it, which I suppose is better than some movies, but this was cheesier and more ridiculous than a Disney movie. A horse so dehydrated that its about to be put out of its misery, and then manages to find the energy to get up and immediately engage in a long distant gallop, is only a taste of this movie.
 
Funniest thing about the movie is that it isn't based on true events as it says. Slate looked into the guys past, and none of the story took place. There is no evidence of a race through the desert, I don't believe he ever purchased and released the mustangs, etc.

Slate wasn't doing any groundbreaking journalism or anything, it was a known fact long before this movie came along that the guy was making it all up. The only way they can justify saying it's based on a true story is that they could honestly say some guy made up a story similar to the movie a long time ago.
 
What happened to the days when people going to movies weren't concerned with ultra-realism or circumstances based on true events.

I enjoyed the film for what it was.
 
I didn't mind it too much until the last 10 minutes. The dying horse and then the same horse being able to win the triple crown 2 seconds later was just too much.

Side note: He shoulda banged that broad when she was ready to give it up to him.
 
This is based on about as true of events as open water or the perfect storm are, completely fictitious except for the small facts.
 
this movie is like one of those feel good movies about a boy and his really lovable and cute dog...except this movie had a horse instead of a dog, and it wasn't cute, and it wasn't a boy, but a dusty aragorn, and it wasn't really a feel good movie.
 
bah... I liked the movie. I'd buy it on sale for $9.99. Besides, I have seen MUCH worse unrealistic holes in mush better movies. You gotta suspend your disbelief a little. If your really an ultra-realist you can't really enjoy ANY movies.

the movie is actually decent...just not anything oscar winning. But i wouldn't buy it for $9.99. A rental is all it's worth.

*SPOILER* My dad and I were laughing our ass off. Seriously I was in stitches and in tears. You've got a horse who's about to be shot for being that close to death, and then it gets up and pulls a seabiscuit. It was too much. Just for a joke when the mustangs were let free I said "He should release hidalgo now." And he did. I could not believe it. But, I could. The movie was so bad.

A little maybe. If the movie has no semblance with reality, as this one didn't, then it no longer becomes storytelling, because it's impossible for the tellee to appreciate anything that's going on as meaningful or logical.

Oh, while we're at it, the part where he saves the homely arabian girl and runs back and everyone greets him is carbon copy from Lawrence of Arabia - interestingly the big sheik in this movie was in that one too. The movie was an unintended comedy more than anything else.

I'm sure that anybody who liked this movie would enjoy any movie they ever see - unless it lacks wire-fighting, mario-like jumping, and the American spirit, of course.
 
havent seen the movie, dont plan to. but the ads struck me as a sort of Rocky IV-esque movie.

instead of American Rocky boxing a Russian and winning in dramatic fashion (cold war)
we have American Hidaldo racing the arabs and winning in dramatic fashion, im assuming (war on terror).

It was entertaining anyway......I don't expect to see total factual movies.

If we only watched totally factual movies we would be looking at a blank screen alot.
