Hiccups. Annoyance or painful?

When I get the hiccups it hurts (physically). None of the "home remedy's" work to make them go away.

I know several people (including my spouse), that say hiccups are just an annoyance, not painful.

Do you find hiccups physically painful? Or just an annoyance??
