Hibernation loop in 2k

Running 2k w/ sp3 (or 4) a friends Sony tower is caught in some kind of loop.
It boots up, then goes right back into hibernation. He tried going into safe mode and choosing the two choices, but there is no difference, it still goes right back into hibernation.

I'm not sure what he did other than playing with the UPS tab under Power Options (he has no UPS). He also has that 'unplug or eject hardware' icon in the systen tray that he was changing the com port (not sure what he has hooked up other than a USB mouse).

Sorry for the short description, but that is all I have now untill I can get over there.

Any ideas?

Going into Hibernatiom?

Hibernation menas that when you switch Off the computer it save the RAM content to the Hard Drive, and load it back when you later Switch On the computer.

You might want to describe better what is the problem.

When you turn on a hibernated PC and leave it on the welcome screen, it automatically goes back into hibernation after a few minutes of inactivity unless you log into any account.

Problem solved (sort of). He tried to use the orginal Phoney all baloney restore disk that came with the box, but stopped short. It wasn't short enough, now he gets a 'invalid disk' message. I told him to reload his bootable 2k disk I made him.

When I said it goes right back into hibernation, I meant it went into hibernation shutdown as soon as the desktop showed. NO time to do anything, as in right away!
