Is it recommended and/or necessary for hibernation to be turned on, on a Windows 2000 workstation, in order for shutdown/UPS software to work properly, i.e. save & close open files, shutdown open programs before the system is shutdown/hibernated ?

Thanks.

Well, it depends on whether you're actually going to be hibernating the system. When you hibernate the system, all the contents of RAM get written to a file on your HD, then your machine turns off. This means that when you boot the system back up, you're in exactly the same state as when you shut it down, and you boot faster than if you had to wait for everything to reload. The downside is that you need another file on your HD that is the size of your physical RAM; the file is there taking up space as long as you have the hibernation feature enabled. However, if you don't plan on using hibernation, there's no point in turning it on and wasting space.

Then since the APC shutdown software that I am using is apparently using this feature to return the system back to the same state as before a power loss, it looks like the hibernation feature does need to be turned on ????

Yes. If it's enabled in the shutdown software, then you should probably turn it on. It would also be a good idea to test it under controlled conditions, so that you know it will work in case of actual power loss.

Yes, that is exactly what I am about to do when I get a minute.

Thanks.

I have an APC UPS. I have hibernation disabled.

The UPS shuts down the computer now instead of going into hibernation. I never leave an unsaved file open. If I do, it is something that I can recreate in seconds. If it is a large file, I save frequently.

If there is a loss of power and I am not near the PC, the UPS forces all the files closed without saving them and shuts down the PC. It works for me!
