Hello to everyone!

A friend of mine is buying a new computer (AMD Athlon 64 based, Radeon 9800) and wants an LCD for various practical reasons (desk space, long exposure times, etc). He passes most of his times doing accounting with excel or other similar programs. He also wants to play the new games like Doom3 or Half-Life2 once in a while when he needs a break ;)

After some researches we got narrowed to these choices but we are open to any other suggestions:

BenQ FP757-BS12 - Flat Panel Display (LCD) - TFT - 17" - 1280 x 1024 - .264mm - 450:1 Contrast Ratio - 12ms Response Time - D-Sub (VGA) Input - Black/Silver - (3Y) $ 599

Samsung SyncMaster 710N (MJ17ASSB) - Flat Panel (LCD) - 17" - 1280 x 1024 - 0.264 mm - 600:1 Contrast Ratio - D-Sub (VGA) - 12ms Response Time - Black - (3Y) $ 575

Prices are in $ CAN.

Thanks !

Regards,
Thor_Sevan.

I would go for the samsung if they are both in the same price range and it is cheaper according to your prices. Samsung makes great (if not the best) monitors. Are these 12ms panels the 18 bit color panels or the 24 bit panels? Do these panels show 16.7M colors or 16.2M colors (with dithering)?

The response times and contrast ratios on those two are great, but you might want to consider something with a DVI input. It will cost more (if needed you can go ahead and get a 16ms panel), but I've heard that it will significantly improve image quality on an LCD.

Finally we went with the benQ because the Samsungs weren't available (B/O) for a long time.

Thanks for your two inputs !

The new Samsung 17incher, I think 173P or something, is just awesome in both graphics and text. So I would recommend that one over others.

But its a bit pricey.
