"Hi, this is the new guy. Give him a phone, computers, access card, dial-in token, network/email access, etc right now."

WTF?!? Unless someone got really nice and hired this guy off the street this morning, someone somewhere must've know he was showing up. At least once a month someone pulls this crap. I send out countless emails and memos stating that I need a minimum of 24 hours notice to prepare for a new hire. If I could pull a new computer out of my ass on command, I would be working the circus sideshow or my own mini storage. It's not like I wave some magic wand and voicemail suddenly gets directed to the right place. Does it say AT Fvucking T on my forehead? Of course I look like the bad guy because, "I am not prepared to welcome someone new." Know what? Piss off, there are about a dozen people who had the courtesy to call the helpdesk and scheduled to have something done.

Finally, "HELL NO ITS NOT OKAY TO "BORROW" SOMEONE ELSE'S COMPUTER". I don't care if the guy is out for two weeks. I'm not disrespect someone by just taking their computer. The new guy will just have to wait because someone was too lazy to make a few stupid phone calls. Of course I'm not alone in my griping. The person that handles HR matters was also thrown for a loop. She had to cancel many scheduled appointments to give the new employee orientation.

ha, our HR person gives us a 2 week notice. We still dont get the computers in time. We are abit "frugal" with the money our company makes.

I propose giving the new hire a crapbox 286 and a cell phone where only half the buttons work, using "it's all we could get on short notice" as an excuse ;)

That's one of the reason's I like the company I'm working for, Its small, and my boss is such a resource and important player in every aspect of the company, so they let him know about new hires, and half the time, he sits in on parts of the interviews. If this place wasn't as small as it is, I'd have left it like you suggested, but for now a 2/hr raise and loyalty is gonna make me stay till June to help them.

It's the opposite where I work. You could tell the IS dept. a month in advance and when the new guy shows up, invariably his desk is empty of anything he might need to be prductive.

Skoorb: Uhhhh.... yea..... I dare you to key the green X5...... :) Actually, one guy that everyone hates in the office has a green one. He had a crapfit when he found out I got one. :)

As long as I have a reasonable amount of time just about anything can be prepared. I do feel sorry for the guy because he is just sitting in an empty cubicle right now. Can't get more depressing than that.

I'll try to rant less since I don't want to be the Jerry Seinfeld of AnandForums. Why do they call it a Windows crash? I mean windows don't crash unless a 90 year old woman from Florida drives he land yacht Cadillac into one. Should it be called a break? Why do they......

If you rant less, let it be because you have fewer reasons to do so!
