I chose shut down and when it says "It's safe to shut down your computer", I have to press my shutdown button hard for five seconds in order for the computer to shut? How come?

You forgot to enable ACPI in your bios that's why.

But all is not lost,go into control panel, then power management & if you can enable APM then it will turn off just like in Win98.

it seems your BIOS doesn't know that the OS has "authorized" shutdown. I dont know exactly how it works, but it seems that when you just press the power button normally, it asks the OS for permission or something. If the computers is frozen, it takes the full 4-5 seconds

If you enabled the "clear pagefile on shutdown" key in the registry it can take several minutes to shutdown based on the size of the pagefile.

You need to enable ACPI in your BIOS and then reinstall the OS.

Others will tell you you can just change the HAL in Device Manager, but you need to be aware that's not supported.

Reinstalling the OS should keep your programs and data and registry intact.

I experienced that same exact issue after fresh installs of Win2K Pro on both of my rigs. Shutdown worked like normal on the two machines simply by enabling APM support under the "APM" tab in Power Options. You might want to make sure APM is also enabled in your system BIOS. Hope this fixes your problemo.
