I really want an HMD, but the stuff I'm finding online is between $50K for a hi-res unit and $400 for a QVGA unit.

Is there any reason I couldn't just rip an EVF (either LCD or CRT which I assume would be easier to interface with) out of a digicam or camcorder and use that?
 
hm well is there any reason I couldn't just do some simple calculations and buy a lense to make me focus farther away?
 
hm whether you can buy such a specific lense and do all that is questionable...

Also to mention LCD screens from digicam are like impossible to rip off without damaging it. Even if you get one out, the interconnects might not be compatible with computers. A digicam or camcoder are also pricy components
 
Why don't you just get an old Fire GL4 (it has a stereo goggles output) and buy the glasses that were made for it? I have a FireGl4 and I've seen a few sets of brand new 3D glasses on eBay for $60
