Went to the range today... rented a Hi-Point 995 9mm when I got tired of screwing around with my 22s (was teaching a friend how to shoot... didnt want to let him loose with a AR-15 on his first day). Anyway, anyone else here ever shoot one? I got into an arguement with another guy at the range, who claimed it was a "highly accurate firearm" for its short length. It was shooting pretty badly for me. I got 3" groups at 50 feet, slow fire. Ugly. OTOH, rapid fire, it was doing pretty well, I was putting the full clip inside the 7 ring at 35' in about 3 seconds.

Anyone else fire it? Any comments? I think its a fun plinking gun, but it sure isnt a target rifle.

I have never shot one, but given that it retails for $169, I would not expect miracles. Frankly all Hi-Point weapons seem only incrementally better than Saturday night specials, and I would be very leery of trusting my life to such a marginal gun.

Well, I had some complaints about the gun's layout. The safety is WAY too high to let you operate it without moving your grip too far to be able to still fire the weapon. The sights are too low, IMO. It was hard to get an good sight picture w/o effort. Also, the mechanism for locking the bolt in the open position was clumsy. However, in the rounds that I put through it, it never failed to function for me.

I don't know, sometimes the cheap ones are all right. My buddy has an AK-47, and it's about the cheapest looking thing you've ever seen . . . stamped metal, rivets, etc., but darned if that sucker can't shoot.
