Can anybody tell me really quick, what the difference between the smart media and the compact flash cards is???

Thank u...

One more thing, what kind of smart media do I need for Olympus C3030Z and what do I need for the Nikon 990???

Aren't there different kinds of smart media and compact flash??? I don't mean differences in capacity...

Smart Media: older tech, max capacity is 64MB (I think). SM cards do not have the drive controller inside the card, so a SM device cannot support newer cards. For example, if you get a camera that supports 64MB SM cards, it would not be able to support a new 128MB card without a firmware update.

CompactFlash: newer tech, max capacity is around 256MB. Devices that support TypeII CompactFlash can use the IBM Microdrive (a miniature hard drive), that comes in 350MB, 500MB, and soon-to-be-released 1GB. CF cards have the drive controller integrated into the card (it basically acts like an ATA drive), so a CF device will be able to support any CF card that is ever released.

Smart Media is being phased out in favor of CompactFlash, because SM is more prone to failure (the contacts are exposed, whereas CF's contacts are not), and because of CF's higher capacity.

So I could not use the CF media in an Olympus C3030Z, which takes SM?

But The Nikon 990, does give me the greater opportunity of cf???

Is that correct???

The 2 types of media are not compatible. The oly cannot use CF, and the Nikon cannot use SM.

There is one caveat with CF. There are 2 types, type 1 and type 2.

The IBM drives are type 2 CF compatible, and are not compatible with Type 1 CF compatible devices (eg. Nikon coolpix 990).

I just had to buy a 32MB Smartmedia card for my Fuji MX-1200. It came with a 4MB card, but that sure ain't enough ;)

I don't think there's currently any sub-$1000 digital cameras that support Type II CF, so that's not a factor...(hopefully this will change soon). There are differences in voltage and size requirements between Type I and II CF, so Type II is more expensive to implement.

CF is really cool, but don't make that the only consideration in your purchase....you can always buy multiple SM cards.

Personally, I would get the Nikon 990, because it is arguably the best sub-$1000 digital camera currently available. If you still can't decide between the two, check out the reviews at http://www.dpreview.com.

Thank u...

@least, I know now that there are two cameras that I could get...

But the problem is that I live in Germany, and I don't know if I find somebody that ships here and if all the electronic accessories fit???

U probably know that we have 220volts and 50Hz...

I am not sure, is there anybody that could help me and that might know about it???

Anybody that has a recharger or something available and knows???

Thank u...
