I just got a Toshiba laptop or $280.00 at Best Buy. I'm trying to uninstall McAfee to put on Norton Internet security. McAfee is always running. How do I kill it, so that I can uninstall it? Thanks for any help.

Welcome!

Would the task manager work? (Ctrl-Alt-Delete)? I don't know anything about McAfee but I do use task manager for closing a lot of things that otherwise don't like to close or shut down.

Bring up the Task Manager (by hitting CTRL-ALT-Delete), find a process that has any semblance of McAfee in it, and end it.

McAfee should have placed an uninstaller in Add/Remove Programs. This uninstaller will stop the McAfee services for you.

As an alternative, use pserv.cpl and set anything you see under "Services" or "Devices" that's related to McAfee to Disabled. Don't mess with other devices or services though.

Hmm, well then McAfee should be providing a way to stop it. Sometimes you can find the system tray icon, right click on it, and click "stop". Other than that, I don't know.

Yea, but if you went into add/remove programs in the control panel then you might be able to uninstall it and it should stop itself.

Mcafee has excellent online help H E R E

At that site you can lookup your version & find uninstall instructions specific to whatever version you have.

Congratulations on getting that laptop at such an incredibly low price!

Edit: After using McAfee for several years, I just this month switched over to Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6, which seems to detect more than McAfee.

I say that because I had updated & run McAfee daily, but then when I installed Kaspersky it immediately detected 3 infections which McAfee had not detected.

Please spare yourself the performance-stealing, unstable, undependable pile of crap that is popularly known as Norton Antivirus/Internet Security.

Excellent alternatives, that are less of a resource hog :

Kaspersky

Panda

Trend Micro
