Hi Fi equipment width?

Is there a standard width for hi fi equipment? If so, why don't electronics manufacturers make DVD players and the like conform to that standard width?

Also, does anyone happen to know where I might be able to find broken/unwanted hi fi equipment? (or the casing at least, I want to build a HTPC/PVR this summer)
