Id hold off till a victior in the format wars has been decided-that or wait till a combo(BlueRay/HD-DVD) player is released by Samsung or LG. If you dont you might end up with another beta machine.

Wow...the reviewer got some simple stuff wrong with his Serenity review:
The show only ran for a few episodes on The WB back in 2004, but became a hot seller on DVD.
It was on Fox, not the WB.

Alas, fate was not so kind to 'Serenity.' Despite some good reviews, the film came and went last fall in a flicker, grossing a meager $38 million worldwide -- barely enough to cover its production budget. Whedon suffered his first high-profile flop,
Actually, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie was Whedon's first high profile flop. Though he didn't direct it his name is directly tied to it as the lead writer.

That and players get down to under $200...

I will agree. And I won't stop buying DVD's in the meantime.

When is an HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player coming out that will play 1080p movies? From what I've read the Toshiba HD-DVD player that was just released only does 1080i/720p. 🙁

Later (don't know how long though). All HD-DVD movies are formatted in 1080p though.

HDTVs that can accept 1080p inputs are just now being released though. Before they couldn't and would upscale to 1080p after downscaling the input.

Yet another reason to hold off.

From this article, it looks like Blue-ray is the only one that can do 1080p.

On launch.... hd-dvd's are mastered in 1080p but none of the first tun players will support it. but then again there are few few true 1080p tv's out there so its really not that much of a loss. Sure in 5 yrs there will be lots of 1080p tv's out there but by that time there will be 1080p hd-dvd players.

and even with blueray (and you have a 1080i or 720p tv) you arent going to want to run it at 1080p.... its always best to keep it the same resolution to your tv (less conversions = better quality). So if you have a 720p tv you are going to want it to output your blueray at 720p.

Blu Ray has pretty much already won anyways. It has almost all the major studios support.

To me universal (bieng hd-dvd only) makes up for almost all of the other studios.... they have a TON of great movies that will be hd-dvd only. Not to mention they are actually releasing some of their good movies early on and not doing what alot of bluray companies are doing and holding back most of their good ones.

8 Reasons not to jump the gun:

1) Betamax vs VHS >>> Loser = Betamax (Even though Betamax was the SUPERIOR format)

2) Laserdisc vs VHS >>> Loser = Laserdisc (Picture Quality better than VHS, but due to poorly manufactured playback systems it died)

3) Minidisc vs CD >>> Loser = Minidisc

4) SACD vs CD >>> Loser = SACD being on life support

5) UMD = life support

6) HDTV's with Component Inputs only = life support (Early adopters gonna get screwed since in the future HD-DVD's/Bluray discs will be DOWNSAMPLED to 540P, below HD resolustions :|)

** Don't get me started on 1080i, 720P and 1080P... ridiculous :|

7) DVD-R / DVD+R = stupid ( but now we have dual burners and dvd players that can read both)

8) High initial costs and no guarantee of the technology being supported

Early adopters always get screwed. Wait it out until the bugs get worked out and the prices get lowered.

Even mid adopters get screwed, look at DVI.. It supports all of the resolutions but simply because it doesn't support HDCP (Some tvs with DVI in support HDCP) they get outed too, this just causes more consumer frustration.. For now, I'll stick to upsampled DVD picture as it does look significantly better than the original..
