I'm writing an analysis of this and I am less than excited about it.

What should I listen to?

depends, do words easily distract you? can you sing and write? or do you just want something to get you going?

I'm usually fan of ministry of sound albums when writing since I can just bob my head along to the constant beat and not get distracted by lyrics. occasionally i'll dance, but that's about it.

It depends what it is...quiet stuff - Enya/Blackmore's Night/etc should be fine, but I'm probably not going to be listening to Metallica and GNR. :p

I'll check out Ministry of Sound- ty!

Agreed. But it's almost TOO soothing as I find myself falling asleep when I put any gwar on. Couldn't hurt though. Dimmu Borgir and Chimaira are both really good choices too.

if you want a good ministry of sound the 2009 annual (australian version) is pretty good

White noise.
Whether you realize it or not, whether you admit it or not, music distracts you. As do many other creature comforts. You actually get a lot more done in a shorter time when you arent too happy or distracted.
But again, no one wants to admit this.

I find I get really focused if I put on one of my favorite movies then drag your text editor so it covers almost all of the video player. That way you can always hear the good bits and then if you glance over you can catch the action.
If you have a handheld gaming device like a PSP or DS, start up a fun game and keep it ready next to you. That will help you keep your goal in mind (if you finish you get to play obviously).
Finally, set up an array of good snacks to keep your energy up. Don't pick boring things like sandwiches or your writing will be boring. Go for gusto, prepare a roast turkey dinner with all the fixings.

Fuck that... every person is different. What is distracting to one person may not be to another. Artificial white noise hits frequencies that make my ears ring, which is much more distracting than most music. Pink noise is better, but can still cause issues. Some music OTOH doesn't distract at lower volumes, and provides a soft rhythm which gets my mind rolling on what I need to do.

Don't lump everybody into one category and claim you know what's best for them. Some people have music that helps, others can't listen to any type of music.

Thank you- saved me time from having to type that out myself.
Personally I can't read w/ music that has lyrics, but I could focus way better when doing math. If it was silent, I would keep wandering off and thinking about other things. So no, music does not distract me all of the time.

Pfft. I'm in no hurry. I despise writing stuff I don't want to write, and I want to alleviate the pain as much as possible. :p

This is just me but I find that In Rainbows the album by Radiohead helps me write.

White noise helps me calm down

Yes, yes, I know, I know.
And 99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name.

When you leave your parents basement and go out into the world and perhaps contribute something to society you will understand better.
Heck, even if you dont leave home and just take a psychology course you will see how foolish you look right now.

But thats OK, I dont blame you. I blame George Dubya for pissing away a billion dollars a week into a sandbox instead of the public school system.

Oh, I see... you're one of THOSE people. That explains a lot. Couldn't think of anything else to say so you turn to personal attacks that have nothing to do with the subject eh? Tell you what, when you get to your junior year in HS you'll learn how to discuss things properly without sounding like a mouth-breathing neanderthal. Can't fault you for something you haven't learned yet.
