Hi all, new here

Been reading the forums for a while, and as a novice modder, was wondering what you all thought about my com - specifically, would it be worth it to upgrade to a radeon 9800 pro? I'm heavy into mmo's (just installed Lineage2), and decided to post here while my account gets verified.

I'd eventually would like to build a whole new com with a PCI express mobo, but money's tight - so just wondering if a quick $200 vid card upgrade would be worth it?

I'd say it would help you out alot, you've already got a solid gig of ram and one of the strongest cards on the market (9800 Pro) runs for $200 making it an excellent buy.

Cool, thanks. My biggest gameplay issues are graphics and I think bandwidth through the south bridge. Playing mmo's, I ususally get slow down (graphics, since I like cranking up the AA) and lag (I think it's the southbridge bandwidth, my soundcard, network card, and vid card all sharing the bandwidth if I'm understanding it right). I know PCI Express will help immensely with this, and I was even tempted to go with the Intel 875 chipset because of CSA.

well, since you seem so enthralled by pci-express, and since the new ati/nvidia cards are literally just around the corner, don't buy anything just yet. the ti4600 is an awesome card and should last you for another 6 months no problem. just wait at least 1 month before you buy anything.

i agree that a videocard would be the best upgrade for you since any other upgrade would require you to alter your entire platform; as in get a new mobo, cpu, and memory.

i think that the new ati x800se would be the best fit for your system since your cpu will be a bottleneck for anything faster. it should be the cheapest of the new cards coming out, and there will be a pci-express version before very long.

I have to agree. Wait for at least a month until the new chips from nv and ati come out. Even if you don't buy one of the new ones, the current cards will most likely drop in price. Right now is a bad time to buy a high end video card.

Edit: why am I trying to save anyone who owns this monitor money!?! How is the response time on that monster? Ghosting?

I think that when the new cards come out they will cost a lot. If you are seeing a slowdown in games now, get the 9800pro for $200, otherwise wait a couple of months for the prices to drop.

yea, the 24" lcd was "free" too - got lucky the first and only time I played blackjack in the casino - and it sure makes playing games, esp. mmo's, that much more immersive 😉

Thanks for all the tips, I finally got ingame, it looks pretty good, but I'm running it so far without AA on - I'll try again tomorrow and see how it goes.

edit: there's some ghosting on the screen during quick camera rotation, but playing mmo's, the action isn't really as fast paced as a fps. I wanted the large screen without the large footprint. It's definitely worth it imo - oh, that's an pretty outdated article, I remember reading it when I was pricing the 240T - I got mine for $2500, expensive still, yes, but the best way I could think of spending my found money.

THIS is extravagant by comparison: http://www.go-l.com/monitors/index.htm
