:D Hi all this is my first post so please go EZ and if its in the wrong place please move !!!

I've been playing around with my 990x and have a nice stable 24/7 oc of 4.4ghz temps 37 idle - 71 prime load...

You would think i would be happy at that if any body wants these settings feel free to ask.

Only thing is... i'd like a bit more lol I can get a stable 4.8 but its a bit warm 45 idle - 85 prime load.

can i get it cooler ! Has any body got same setup or close.

my set up

Rampage iii
990x with H100 cooler
12gb gskill pi 1600 6*2gb with cooler
2* 120 ocz vertex 3 in raid 0
1200w cooler master psu
2* 8800gt alpha dog 1gb in SLI

bois 200*22 = 4.4ghz

Are you using the stock fans on the H100? They seem to not be the best according to experiences around here.

It sounds like you are going to need a bigger radiator(s) so you can can have more/larger fans pushing the heat out.

Yes they are stock. Think that could be it ? I will try that any thing else you can think of ?

Thanks

that is a good OC. What stepping are you on? I have my system in sig. Also, what is your uncore ratio/voltage set too? That could also increase temps. If QPI DRAM means uncore voltage, then 1.4 is a bit high, and could also warm things up. To get it lower, you could use a less aggressive BCLK and higher core multi. That might help with temps.

On my system, I simply have it at 4 GHz stable, but my chip is older, not as good. Requires a bit more vcore to get up there, currently at about 1.366. My uncore Voltage is lower though, under 1.35V. I am under a custom loop.

dude my 990x was cherry bin'd out of 7, and can only do 4.8 with a insane amount of vcore.

she does 4.4 like yours with HT on with 1.375 on vcore and 1.3 for qpi.

4.8 AINT worth it, in all honesty... if u want 4.8 get an Ivy, otherwise in my honest opinion, your best off leaving it at 4.4

Your Qpi dram is already near danger levels... i wouldnt push qpi, higher then 1.375, as thats the IMC on your gulftown, and those have a bad habit of degrading faster then you can say OMGWTFBBQ.

As others have said 4.8 is too ambitious for that chip. Get a SB or upcoming IB if you want to see a bigger number in CPUZ :D

considering how long this chip lasted me... id say easily the safe spot for endurance is 1.375vcore and 1.35 qpi dram... which translates to unicore voltage.

anything higher and ur going to eat life out of the cpu.

ive had a gulftown die @ 1.45 qpi dram under load in matter of weeks.
I learned fast what a gulftown can do and what they cant do.

Those of us with 980X and 990X, running those speeds, when is a good time to upgrade? So far I have not seen anything to really knock my socks off. I must have the freak H50 looking at those temps. At 4.3ghz, on 1.35, I idle at 30C and P95 after 4 hours is 72C. I am using GT fans though, and my room stays about 68F to get those temps, but still not bad on an H50.

I do have one problem. If I raise my FSB by more than 10, I get a BSOD. I can multi clock with no problem. What would cause that?

Dude, what are yu running now? I never noticed you getting involved in the 3930K/3960K release threads.

running mine at 4.5Ghz (34x133) w/ 1.3875V CPU and 1.250V QPI. I found that trying to get past 4.5GHz required a ton more voltage so I stopped there.

mine never gets past ~52-57C (depending on the ambient temperature in my computer room... usually floats between 73F-77F)

Thanks for all the replys most welcome

done a little bit ov tweeking on the 4.4 got the temps down

using lower settings now but still with 200*22 as my ram is 1600 this is the best oc i could get to suit my ram.

but she's steady away now also i have put my whats it called ......

got it from "Intel Speedstep/EIST etc. are the equivalents of old-school AMD "Cool'n'Quiet"...this is, CPU has lower multi and vcore when idle, but *immediately* clocks up to 100% speed and Vcore voltage once the the slightest load is applied on the CPU. This is a good thing and works allright. As you also say, you can very well all those features have activated in bios. On my pretty overclocked quad those bios thermal management settings dont influence the overclock at all" thanks Flexy!!!

works a treat so now idle its sits at 26c lol @3.4-3.6ghz stick on the prime and its 4.4 @ 68-72c which is great for me.

You don't need such a high BCLK/Host Frequency and you can adjust for your RAM using your Memory Frequency (this is what evga calls it, it's your memory multiplier).

Remember, one of the best things about these extreme processors is having a completely unlocked multiplier

I suggest trying something like this:
33x .. 133Mhz = 4389Mhz effective
12x memory multiplier = 1600Mhz effective

4.4 is an excellent oc. No, people are so insatiable, they want more, always :)

Yeah, mine can only do about 4GHz with my cooling setup. With higher end air, I'm betting I could do 4.2GHz (since that's what the previous owner was able to do).

4.4 is awesome

higher BCLK increases uncore frequency though. I remember there was an article a while back on AT called "OC your uncore." Still not sure how much difference it will make :D

There is a separate setting for UNCORE freq (multiplier) in my BIOS, however anything past 21x my computer doesn't boot period.

That is odd, I think my uncore multi =21. (3360 UCLK = 160 BCLK * 21) 3360 is the reported NB freq on CPUZ, not currently in the bios though.

What is your memory and BCLK configured as? My memory is 1600 Mhz, or 160*10.

What motherboard do you have?

Well, after looking at the sheet, your memory is running 133*14=1862. Your uncore should be good up to about 4000 MHz (depending on CPU), with a decent amount of VTT and right memory/BCLK settings. You are at 133*21 = 2793. You may need more VTT, dont know what stock is for your board, but you should be good to 1.34 V.

Is there a bios update for your board that might help?

not sure about the vtt... tbh I haven't looked at it in a while.

I'm getting ready to switch to an evga classified 3 board which should open up some head room (currently have a evga x58 sli board). I'll have to mess with it some more.

This is something I'm really interested in as well; my 990X is @ 4.41GHz @ 1.30V V-Core and 1.275V QPI/DRAM. However, in CPU-Z, my Uncore (NB Frequency) shows as only 2673.1 MHz!

I want to get my Uncore to around 3800 - 4000 MHz. First of all, how do I do that? All the settings in my BIOS (Asus P6T7 WS Supercomputer) are on Auto except the BCLK (133), multiplier (x33), v-core voltage (1.30V), and QPI/DRAM voltage (1.275V).

Please help!

you can try changing your CPU Uncore Frequency to something > 21x

I have the same issue with my 980x, in the BIOS the Uncore frequency will show ~3700 but shows less in CPUz
