I bought a 4tb hgst deskstar nas drive from newegg about a year ago. It came in a retail box straight from newegg. Now the other day I go to the hgst website and try to run my serial number and it's showing invalid serial number.

Anyone know what the deal is with this? The drive isn't bad i'm just wondering about this... Maybe their database is just f*cked? btw, this drive was definitely from newegg not some third party seller.

Did you type the serial number right? Double check.

I didn't type it. cut/paste. I guess i'll pull the drive and see if it matches on the sticker.

You don't have to do that. Just get a program that will tell you the serial number and type it by hand instead to make sure there was no spaces.

Yeah thanks for replying Elixer, I figured it was a screw up. I'm sure the warranty will be fine. The drive will probably long outlast the 3 year warranty anyway.

I had to RMA an HGST drive not that long ago and had the same issue. Turns out there were a couple extra digits on the serial number that are not actually part of the serial number. Sent an email to them, they straightened out my invalid number deal and took care of the defective drive. I would rate HGST customer service as good or better than any of the hard drive manufacturers I have dealt with. You shouldn't have any problems getting your warranty issue taken care of.

HGST is pretty fantastic. Back in 2004, 250GB drives were the bee's knees. I had a few of them fail on me, and they sorted it real quick. Ended up getting them cross-shipped, and everything. Really top notch customer service.
