I may be wrong here, but I think I can sum up this thread in three letters: NDA :(

Whistler build 2257 won't allow me to install my Netgear FA310TX ethernet card even though the drivers from the Netgear installation disk and the drivers in the I386 file are identical (it will identify the card, but not load the drivers). It's is still way too early in the pre-beta stage to expect much. The user interface is graphically nicer looking with easier navigation, and I hear that later builds (2273, 2287) have cut down the boot time to 10 seconds and added the winMe movie maker, but I have only read this in forums that *cough* deal with Microsoft Beta software.

i dunno...i am still deciding what i think about it.
it's much like win2kpro...
the startmenu can be changed (you can use normal startmenu or personalized which adds a whole nother pane of frequently used progs).
appearance can be chosen (allthough i hope in later builds you can customize the professional theme).
you can use the normal appearance allowing you to change the titlebar colors and whatnot just like normal, or you can use the pro appearance and it makes the titlebar look different, but that is the only theme i have to choose from and i cant change the theme (or havnt figuered out how to yet anyways).
generally it's pretty cool, but i hope to see more within the next builds that are released for testing.

Win2k drivers should work (same kernel) but remember, this is pre-beta and really only good for a test drive. I wouldn't install it on anything mission critical because it is more a buggy demo than a fully functional beta (after all, this is an pre-beta that is supposed to be internal, no doubt anyone not affiliated with MS has *cough* stumbled accross this through nefarious means *cough*). It might be a good idea to wait until after the new year to fiddle around with a more established beta release. Besides, snowboard season is approaching :)

oh no, not after a beta copy,(hell i am just getting my head around win2k!) :) just looking to buy a couple of new pieces of hardware that work in win2k, (because the tv card i have doesn't support win2k), and do wish to get caught out buying hardware to replace perfectly good hardware which just isn't supported!
Thanks! :)

The reason why there are so few beta testers is because Whistler is not yet in its Beta phase. The only people who should have *legal* access to it are MS developers and third-party system integration engineers (like myself) who are developing on the platform.

With the code being pre-beta, I think it looks great so far. There is some neat-looking GUI changes, but on the outside it looks and feels a LOT like Win2K right now.

Camaroguy, MSDN UNiversal subscribers have access to d/l it and get it on CD also. I have a MSDN UNiversal subscription (most products I get with a 10 user development license). I have been testing it since the first public beta release. I think it is very stable, actually more so than the fully updated final release of 98-2. I haven't found anything wrong yet, but I am sure that will change. I wouldn't wipe out your hdd to run it alone though just yet.

Cablegod, when I wrote that previous post, on Oct. 25, Whistler wasn't publicly released. I'm aware of the MSDN Uni. Subscription--I have one myself, as well.

Glad you're having success with it. Good luck.
