Ok it's CA so it never really gets that cold, but it's 30s at night so I need to make some adjustments for the rest of the week. The pets need to come indoors for these couple of nights and what not. Even during the morning, 40s is too cold for me in just regular slacks. I have no problem layering my uppers with a shirt, sweater and a pea coat....

Do you guys from the cold regions of the world wear thermals or what? The only thermals I've worn are when I go snowboarding and even then when you're moving around a lot with the sun, 40s isnt cold anymore.

And no don't make fun of me for being in CA or anything. We let our house sit around 60-62 or so (I hate people who crank their heaters to 68 or 70 or whatever and I walk in with a sweater and I gotta strip down to my t-shirt) and I'm always in a t-shirt indoors. Usually a sweatshirt will be all I need for the winter except on those few cold nights a year where it goes below freezing.

Edit: Forget going to work. What about just a casual evening out with friends where you're gonna walk around outside in the city for a bit. Say it's 30s-40s. What do you wear for your PANTS. Say you want to be somewhat dressy meaning you have a trench or a peacoat or some coat with probably a sweater or a button shirt underneath. With a hat, gloves and scarves you'll be pretty warm in the upper body regions, but what about your lower body? How do you keep that as warm?

Only time you wear thermals here usually is if you plan on doing some sort of outside activity for more then a hour or so.

Layers you got it.

When i go fishing on lake in winter it's about the coldest because there is no mountains to shield wind or earth to have heat. So I usually wear insulated boots, flannel jeans like this:
WR_1969_DARK-DENIM.JPG

and a good coat like a 4in1 waterfowl jacket.

No under thermals just regular clothes like a long sleeve Tee

Right now, all of Minnesota is laughing at you.
I live in Virginia these days and today I will probably go to school in a t-shirt and jeans, while the rest of my classmates cry and piss and moan. Then I will laugh again.

As for useful advice: I love lined jeans and lined work trousers, but I bet in CA you wouldnt find those in any store. I highly recommend long underwear. One thing anybody from Colorado or Minnesota could tell you is multiple thin layers work MUCH better than one heavy layer. Get some silk long underwear and some heavy duty poly long underwear. In extreme cold, wear the heavy stuff on top of the light stuff.
Get a pair of jeans one size larger to make room for those extra layers.

http://www.wintersilks.com/products.aspx?BRANCH=1~12~&dept=Silk+Long+Underwear-Mens+Heavyweight
There are links on the left for lightweight and mediumweight.
Also, check out Amazon. You can find all sorts of long underwear for cheap.
Get some quality winter socks and (if you have the money) insulated boots. I have waterproof Wolverines with 800 grams of Thinsulate. They cost about 150 bucks but are worth it. If your feet are cold, everything feels cold. Always make your feet the number 1 priority. Trust me on this. People is other states figured that out a long time ago.

I highly recommend good gloves. Again, you probably wont find them in CA. I just got some Gore Tex gloves from Amazon. They insulate completely from water and are pretty darn warm too. They go up way past the wrist which is also smart. Seal Skins are nice gloves too. Dont complain about the price. I promise you those skimpy leather things dont do shit in real cold.

Finally, the most important: Hats.
If you completely bundle up your body and leave the head open, you will still lose 80% of your body heat. Get a good knit cap thats also durable.
Those gangster caps many of you silly californians wear might actually be enough. They are fairly heavy and thick though most arent very well made. A ball cap is not enough. A hooded jacket may be enough but only if the hood is thick. And I still recommend a good cap anyway.

And remember, keep your feet warm and dry. If they get wet, they WILL get cold. If they get cold, your whole body feels cold.

Good luck.

ACTUALLY:

I just read the title again and he makes in sound like he needs something warm on his way to work, but he doesnt wanna sweat his balls off AT work.
Ok, lemme think.

They look stupid, but snow pants are incredibly practical. And you can take them off at work and be comfortable all day.
Just google for snow pants. Again, I recommend Amazon for purchase.

As for store fronts, I know they dont have Fleet Farm in your part of the country. Maybe you have a Rugged Wear House? Or check the sporting goods stores, they always have something warm, even if its not exactly what you want.

I don't understand the problem. Are you standing, waiting for a bus for a couple of hours outdoors? Or are you going from house/apt. to car to work......outdoor exposure time being minimal.

Unless you plan on being outdoors for over an hour or two, just wear what you wear.....put a jacket on. T-shirt with long sleeved shirt over top of it and jacket on over both.

Sheesh....it's only in the 40's and it's not like you're going to be camping out in the weather, is it?

? I wear what I always wear since the building is climate controlled. The only difference is what I wear overtop while I walk from my car to the office. Winter I wear a jacket, hat, and gloves. Spring/Fall just a light jacket, and summer nothing,

LOL. If I saw someone walking around in snow pants when it was 30 or 40 degrees i'd probably bust out laughing.

You poor, poor, Californian. 40 degrees for you is like what, -10 degrees to the rest of the country? :p

Anyway, I recommend thermals only for temps below freezing.
Just wear extra layers of clothing that you can comfortably shed if you really are that cold. Keep moving if possible.

And by "moving" I mean walking around once in a while, not shaking uncontrollably or rolling on the floor.

Unless it's to go out in the mountains to do stuff like skiing, I've never worn long johns or any snowpants in my adult life. Jeans + underwear. It was -35 celsius yesterday.

Pansy.

If I'm going to be outside all day, here's my loadout(assuming 40F)...

Tshirt
Thermal shirt
Sweatshirt
Vest
Thermal bottoms
Pants
Wool socks(year round)
Shoes/boots
Gloves
Scarf if it's windy
Regular hat(ball cap, touring cap)

If I'm just going to be outside for 1/2 hour or less...

Jacket
Wool socks
Shoes/boots
Hat

Is this supposed to be a Fleabag parody thread? 40F? Serious?

When I lived in SF, the heaviest coat I ever wore was my NF Denali fleece jacket.

If you have to be a woman, get some thick wool slacks.

We don't need to wear thermals inside because we know how run indoor heat that keeps us warm. ;)

If I lived in CA, would probably get a thin water + wind proof shell(eVent/Goretex) and wear a insulating softshell under. That way you can wear one or the other, or both depending on the type of weather. Add more layers as necessary.

I am looking forward to my 5 degrees F and 45 mph winds. Usual jeans, t-shirt, button up shirt, winter coat (single layer one mind you), some gloves and my dorky Minnesota Gophers hat.

Military issued green thermal tops. They zip up and cover most of the neck. One of my favorite pieces of kit.

I took the dog for a walk last night at about 9PM. I had a t-shirt on with a wool sweater and a light windbreaker, jeans and shoes. I was a bit cold at first but by the time I got back to the house I was quite warm and toasty...and it felt like it was 100 degrees in my house.

Wow, I didn't even wear extra layers on my legs when it was -20. Just wear a coat and suck it up like everyone else.
