Heatsink related deaths are common.. I think.

Don't feel bad, I'm sure its time was up. On a side note, I hear its bad luck not to get an FX-60 when that happens =)

yea, it is your fault.....it looks like you just pulled the heatsink off without twisting it while it's heated up (the thermal paste/pad)

Looks like he twisted it to me. Why else would the core be in a rotated position on the heatsink like that? It would be centered and square if he just pulled it straight up without twisting.

Yea.... :( It actually wasent my fault, the thermal pad is like superglue, it took a screwdriver and hammer to get that core off of there. Also this CPU arrived DOA anyways, so no real loss.

Lesson learned: Dont use crappy thermal pad!

or dont buy cheapass heatsink!!

or clean the pad off and use AS5!

Yea one of those will do :p

no.....the same thing would happen if he didn't twist it, he had to heat it up then twist it.

Now THAT would have been priceless on any recent AMD FX series.

I think I would have cried.

Crummy chips. Not knocking AMD but those bare cored athlons especially the 1400 Mhz t-birds - were hot puppies!

You did not hear too many bare die coppermines following that fate because they ran much cooler (lower watt density) and didn't turn the thermal pad into something nasa should be using to hold tiles to the shuttle!

Yea i did wonder why there isnt so much about dead socket 370 chips cuz i noticed my coppermine had its core exposed, i simply put it down to them being less popular since it was only socket 370 coppermines that were like that, AMD's entire lineup was like that for 4 or 5 years.

Oh man that really blows. I don't even know what to say. It's obvious that you tried twisting the hsf. Probably the TIM wasn't hot enough.

I did that :D I used superglue. It was a broken CPU anyways, no post (came with a small chip out the corner) and the D-bracket lights pointed to a CPU failure. This was BEFORE the core fell off :p so im sending it back with the core superglued on. No hope in hell of that cpu workin again :( poor lil feller.

If you say so.

The P3 Coppermines took a lot more abuse & kept working too ... I have an 850 mhz one that has two corners crunched off of it & it still works perfectly.. if you did that to any older Athlon it would be dead for certain!

LOL...why is it people insist on taking a close up (probably not using macro mode) and posting blurry pictures? I'd rather see a clear picture farther away. Not picking on you bro,,,It's a common thing that amuses me.

I have one of those in my old game machine. It has several chips and cuts along the edges (the corners are basically gone) and had burned a permanent impression on the last heatsink I had on it, but strangely still works fine. :D

Well in the case of A Xp's, u get what u pay for, they were quite cheap, good old northwoods spanked them in benchmarks quite well though.

A64 > northwood > A xp/prescott
