Emirates is a little cheaper but have to make a short flight first
United would be direct. Any opinions? Ive never flown Emirates, and never United internationally. Coach, most likely.

not even a comparison

Emirates

unless you are tall, maybe you'd like to opt for United's economy plus section which gives a tad more leg room

Take united, buy econ+, take your favorite pharmaceutical and be happy you don't have to deal with a transfer.
Emirates will get you better food, better service, better everything, but none of that matters if you miss your connection (or your luggage does) during the transfer.

How long is the short flight? How much time would the whole connection thing take? I wouldn't mind a connection flight if it was somewhere I wanted to visit (I'd probably never leave the airport, but it sorta counts as having been there).

short flight is about 1 hr, layover adds about 4 hrs each direction.

Emirates, Emirates, Emirates....

There is NO question at all about this.

United -- even international -- is so bad that I think I'd rather fly UPS instead.

I took the United IAD-DXB flight earlier this year, and it was horrid. Yes you get a little extra legroom in economy but the seats were horrible. The Delta ATL-DXB is a little better but I prefer connecting through Amsterdam to break it up a little bit now. So I would say even with the layover go Emirates for sure.

3-4 hours is the max I can stand being cooped up in the flying prisons that most US carriers operate.

Take Emirates.

thanks. IAD-DXB is the one I was considering... looks like the emirates flight out of JFK is the way to go.
