I cut it close this Christmas, my bank account was down to 10 bucks until I get paid tomorrow. I knew exactly what it was at was going to be fine as I had already paid all my bills and was getting paid in a day anyway. I wake up to check my account and see it's at -175 dollars. What the hell?

So I check the transactions and Microsoft charged me 13.50 for a subscription to X-Box live. Despite the fact that I don't own an X-Box. And I haven't had an X-Box Live account in over 2 years. Chase threw a fit and charged me an outrageous overdraft fee.

So my question is, do I call Microsoft or Chase at this point? I'm figuring Chase just because I want this overdraft fee reversed, and I guess there's a small chance someone stole my identity. There's been no other funny transactions, so I think it was just Microsoft being retarded, but if I contact them instead of my bank they'll simply credit my account and I'm still out almost 200 bucks.

both.

So, after two years, MS out of the blue, after canceling your account 2 years ago, just decided to charge your account for XBL, after TWO YEARS? That seems kind of far fetched. Have you done anything with Microsoft recently that would require you to pay for something?

I would say Chase first. Get that overdraft fee removed and talk to them about getting the payment to MS reversed, since you didn't authorize it. Then contact MS to find out why they charged you.

both cause they wont know what to do. Have Microsoft credit you the money and then call Chase (and nicely) ask to get the fee waived. It was due to some misunderstanding with Microsoft.

This is why you should only use your debit card for small, one-time transactions. A subscription service should be placed on a credit card.

Call MS, then Chase; or conference them together have them work it out while you listen. I've done that before, it's actually quite amusing.

and how the hell do you only have $10 in your acount, don't you have a savings account that you can "borrow" (i.e. transfer money over until you get paid) against for such emergencies that the checking gets low?

It was an unauthorized charge. Contact chase and explain this ask for the overdraft to be waved.

If I were you though I would consider changing your bank, what crazy bank charges a $161.50 overdraft charge for one charge? My bank only charges $35.00.

My savings account is at another bank. I have issues with leaving my savings in the actual SAVINGS account when they're with the same bank, due to easy online transfers. To prevent myself from being stupid with my money, I leave my savings at ING instead.

I'll call them both. I agree that seems pretty fishy with Microsoft. Out of the blue after 2 years? That's why I was slightly concerned about identity theft. Maybe there are like a million attempts to charge 500 bucks to my account for flat screens and they didn't go through because I only had 10 bucks in there.

First of all, that overdraft fee is insanely high. You may want to consider a different bank entirely but that is a whole different ballpark. For the time being, I would try to get that conference call going. I have also done that in the past and it does work out sometimes. However, you are going to have to get lucky to have your overdraft fee removed regardless of whether MS admits to being at fault of it or not simply due to your bank's policy. You are entirely at the mercy of Chase right now. MS will not pay your overdraft fee and Chase is not required to reverse the fee even if MS confesses to making a mistake.

Be very cooperative and nice since you have no leverage due to policy. In the future, I recommend that you talk to Chase about overdraft protection which requires you to have a savings account with probably about 100+ dollars in it. I know you don't like the idea of having a savings account in the same bank as your checking account, but you should really consider it because it is the only real defense you got for these situations. Besides, you wouldn't need to keep all of your savings in that account. You just need to keep enough in there to protect yourself from over drafting.

Just call Chase and tell them you never authorized Microsoft to charge that to your account.

Plan to on my lunch break. Are you all excited to hear the details? I'm just going to get the "Well Mr. Agentbolt we'll be sure to look into that and contact you when the investigation is complete" song and dance.

Did you happen to notice an Xbox at any of your CL encounters? Perhaps THEY should be thanking you for free XBL access. ;)
