Hey spidey - I don't want to circumvent my school's security measures!

Rather, I just want to pay for my own legit connection!

But, I've been told that because of the nature of the infrastructure, cable internet and DSL are both impossible over the cable/phone lines on campus. So are my only options dial-up and very expensive wireless? I find that hard to believe but it appears to be true.

Yeah, I saw that thread.

Unfortunately that is true. You are at the mercy of your dorm/unis physical infrastructure. You're going through their cable infrastrcture and PBX/voice lines.

Time to start looking at an apartment - best time of you life man.

If having a reasonable Broadband Internet connection is crucial factor for well being, it has to be taken into consideration while one is looking for a place of Education.

I.e. Transfer to another place were there is no sever problem like the one that you are facing.

I cannot imagine going through the extreme hassles and losses of switching colleges, going to school an hour farther away, etc. etc. JUST so I can use Outlook and use Steam. 😛 However, it does suck not being able to.

And I have to live on campus or live at home. 🙁 I can deal with it, but it'd be NICE to have access to those things.

How feasible would it be to use my computer 100% remotely? As in, leave it at home, and use it remotely via my laptop here? If I did it via a browser would it ONLY use port 80? Would that consume much bandwidth? Would there be some things that wouldn't work very well doing that?

As in remote desktop? Well, anything involving frequently-updated graphical data would suffer tremendously. 🙁

Your talking about VNC which is much better then windows remote desktop. Does it take alot of bandwith? Some, it just takes a long time to get the updates, for instance you would expect a 3-5 second lag delay from your home to your laptop. Check out VNC it isnt to bad.

How would they know where you live? A few friends of mine went to a uni that has the same policy: if you're under 21 you must live on campus or with parents. So live off campus, leave all address stuff to your parents house, and be a commuter. I guess they only needed to do it for one year or so before turning 21, but they were fine and I don't see any way that the uni would know otherwise. Of course, if your parents house is further than an hour drive away, they might be suspicious.
