Hey guys, sorry it's been awhile. I've been having serious problems with my cable modem provider lately, and I have not been able to post here for a bit. I just thought you guys might like to know I will be bringing a 1.2ghz Palomino/DDR system online this weekend, and it will be running Seti for the team 24/7. I will be overclocking it to the 1.4ghz - 1.5ghz neighborhood, and cranking the FSB as high as it will go. I am hoping to be able to break the 4hr/wu barrier...I get like ~4.25hr/wu now with my Tbird 1.2ghz @ 1.4ghz, 165FSB. It will be interesting to see how this new core will handle Seti. I will report some preliminary numbers as soon as I have them. The new system will consist of the following...

Epox 8K7A Mainboard (AMD 761)
256mb Crucial PC2100 DDR
1.2ghz Palomino/MP
Swiftech MC462-A

Wish me luck...:)

Insane3D,
I have the same ram and motherboard.
What settings do you use for your ram?
I'm using 8862222 right now.
EDIT: 8882622
Do you have the Auto Detect DIMM/PCI Clk enabled or disabled.
When I increase the FSB, my hard drive gets lower numbers in Sandra.
Right now I have dropped mine down to 133 X 11 = 1463.
Is there some other setting I should check?
Thanks.

Curt Oien:

I haven't built the system yet, I have had to work all week, but I have four day weekend coming starting tomorrow. I will be setting it up then. I will keep your questions in mind when I am building, and I have been in contact with a couple of other members that are setting up something similar, so if I can't answer them, I will ask around for you.. :)

ElFenix:

I will run the bench you requested, but I am not familiar with it..could you hook me up with a link? :)

"I heard first week in july. 3D must know some one."

Nope, the 1ghz and 1.2ghz Palo's are for sale and in stock, the 1.4ghz Palomino's are going to be in by early July. Actually, there is some confusion regarding the Palomino. There are two flavors of the Athlon 4/Palomino available now, and one more to come. They are as follows.

1. Mobile Athlon 4

- Palomino core, 1ghz speed only at the moment, 1.4v default vcore.

2. Desktop Multi-Processor Certified Athlon MP

- Palomino core, Power Now! disabled but supported, 1.75v Default Vcore, Available in 1ghz and 1.2ghz speeds currently, with the 1.4ghz coming in early July.

3. Official Desktop Palomino (Official name not decided yet)

- Available starting @ 1.5ghz, should be announced by mid to late August, Palomino core.

AMD says the MP CPU's are to only be used in AMD760MP based dualie boards like the Tyan. They do however work fine in most DDR and KT133A based boards. All of these CPU's have the same core.

I ordered mine last week from Monarch computers and it came Tuesday of this week. :)

This might be a little OT, but can you unlock the multiplier of a Palomino like you can a T-Bird? Thanks ahead of time:)

The 1.2ghz MP I got is factory unlocked. It appears that AMD is not locking their high end chips..usually 1.2ghz and up. Even if it is locked, the unlocking process is the same...

TLC

I hope you get that machine running quickly! :)

Here's an OT question...for your cable modem, when you connect it directly to a NIC, do you use a straight or a crossover cable? I'm having Adelphia cable installed on Tuesday. Wish me luck. ;)

Sweet, I hope it does. I already have a 100 ft straight cat5 cable running from the basement to my 2nd floor. I'm eventually getting a router so the cable type won't matter, but initially I'm just having them install it on this computer. If it needs a crossover cable I guess I'll have to use my 5 port switch as a crossover device.

You usually only need a crossover cable when connecting two hubs together, or directly connecting 2 NICs. Your cable modem should use a straight cable to your NIC or router.

I borrowed a router from work and installed it with my cable modem. It worked great, accept for a few gaming problems when using multiple computers. I am now back to using Microsoft's Internet Connection Sharing, which is more compatible with gaming. I'm undecided about getting a router, since ICS has never given me any problems.

if you use the WAN uplink port on a hub/switch i don't think you even need an xover cable then. which sorta confused me when i was plugging my switch into my switched router and blah blah network topography.

Ok, thanks for the info. I think I remember hearing of some people needing to use a crossover cable for modem -> NIC, but it seems like that's pretty rare.

OK guys..I just started testing @ 1.4ghz, and it seems to be crunching WU's at the rate of almost 3hrs flat...:Q:Q:Q. I haven't tried the ARS bench yet, but I will.

Man, I have the same board in my main machine and it does WUs in about 5 hours.

I would definetly upgrade to shave that kind of time of each work unit. That is 8 a day from one single processor machine. Please keep us posted Insane3d.

Is yours running significantly cooler than a 1.4 OC tbird?

I just finished 4 work units, and the longest one took was 3 hours, 4 minutes!! :Q:Q So much for the 4 hour barrier...

Seti Spy is reporting the following:

Processing Rate : 3.10 hour / work unit (31.74% per hour)
Processing Speed : 317.54 MegaFLOP's / second
Processing Efficiency : 3.17 CPU Cycles / FLOP

:Q :Q

Must keep money in bank. Must keep money in bank. 3hrs. 3hrs. Money flying out of bank.

No seriously, I was wondering if you could give us some more specs?

Like HS/fan, how much you are overclocking, and what kind of temps and volts you are running. I would really appreciate it

Also is this with that new beta bios you mentioned in another thread?
