I disagree with the mod for a change. Regardless of how interesting the discussions are, I think some of his comments are highly offensive if not outright wrong. (the one about how women drive is a borderline example)
I don't think the mods would tolerate it if he was directing his remarks toward them, why should they be tolerated when he singles out other members (ex: zippy).
As I said, he is dancing around the line. I didn't say that posting interesting threads excuses you from being respectful to other members.
As to his joke about women - once again, that's a judgement call. I don't see that as substantially different from the southern jokes thread, or making fun of Asians speaking Engish in video games.
As to how much we allow in terms of insulting moderators, I think we're rather thick-skinned. I know I am. I would turn the point back to you - how many people would be calling to ban Russ or Red Dawn for telling that joke about women drivers?

Now I know you mods can do better than that 😉 Plenty of people think they are both asses I imagine. Personally I appreciate sarcastic humor, dry wit and the like of their posts, but many, new comers particularly, don't always see the humor in it. That guy in the opera thread probably wouldn't object to a russ banning right now right now 🙂
edit: I got the quip and forgot to put in the real response heh. Pretty much like viper said, the women drivers thing I don't have a problem with really. Its linking to zippys thread, notice too the link is named "retard." So he's making fun of him which is okay I guess 😕 but then the offensive name calling I think is too far. Can I link to a thread and title it "stupid (insert racial slur)" ?

I agree with Viper. The zippy thread was out of line IMO. The women joke would have been alright if it wouldn't have been for his ridiculing thread earlier.

Let me try to clarify my point and address the mods comments. I agree that joking should not be moderated in the respect in which the mod addressed it. If joke threads are going to be allowed, women jokes should be included. I enjoy joke threads. However, I did not construe the comment as a joke.

I saw it as an outright attack. Now I doubt that, had he not been singling out and attacking members all day, that I would have been so concerned. Imho, the comment was not meant as a joke, but rather, in the spirit of his previous posts, as a flame/insult/comment to get people's goat/whatever you would like to call it. In this light, I think the comment was out of line. Had it been a joke it would have been different. As for the attack on Zippy, I think that was downright malicious and he owes zippy an apology at the least. Perhaps you are right, that his posts, while borderline do not warrant a ban. I respect your decisions as mods, and so will not push the issue further.

He dances across the lines of human decency, but he's not in bannable territory just yet. To be fair, his latest topic has drawn more interesting discussion than many of the off topic neftitudes of late.
So ridiculing someone is ok...... but making a nef post that hurts no one is not because it annoys people and uses bandwidth. 😕
I agree with everyone here. You say you have rules, but you allow some to bend them, while others are banned. Anyone who makes a post aimed at ridiculing another member should at least be reprimanded, you have stated that clearly several times. But instead, you allow him to go on. It's like the IB** posts, some people are banned for it, while others go off scot free. If you are going to expect people to follow the rules, then they should be enforced the same for everyone. I agree with almost everything you do, and I usually defend the Moderators all the time. But this just is not right.

gosh. I'll yield to this. linking to zip's post about the poem and having "retard" as the text was wrong. it is not politically correct as there is nothing funny about people who are mentally hanicapped and to associate what I considered "a poor approach to courting a girl" with a handicap is inappropriate. nowadays, though it doesn't in anyway justify linking to zippy's thread as retard, how often have you guys and gals sed "that's retarded" and not meant physically handicapped?
read through my thread, cover up the names. pick out the ones that are personal attacks. most of them are directed at me and I haven't really attacked anyone else but rather tried to defend my actions against a stubborn mob. the only thing ppl ahve come up with for "banning" me is the zippy/woman thing and most only think the zippy thing. but that was the first post in my thread. I think many of you have acted hypocritically about personal attacks and I will quote some of you guys regarding what I considered personal attacks towards me.

I'm not totally oblivious and I knew that I was getting into quips with too many ppl over something i considered very minor and I'm gonna tone it down because it accomplishes nothing to get ppl mad... Iwas just looking to debate ... mental excercise while sharing my pt of view... and I'm glad many found my thread entertaining...unfortunately, what I thk ppl enjoyed most was the mud slinging and not the posts I made 😛

viper: dont u thk a ban is pretty severe? I'm glad you are not a mod.
though I'm prolly biased, I thk the mods have a good grasp of what my intentions have been esp regarding the woman thing. if i do cross that line, warn me first because I use AT for for/sale trade stuff and hot deals too 🙂 and occasionaly if i can, I'll try to do some tech support though others are much better than me at it.

It has long been a rule here that posts directly attacking another member are not allowed. If I made a post stating "vi_edit is a bloody idiot," it would be immediately locked, & I would probably receive a warning. I don't care about the PCness of using "retard," I don't care that in other threads he was quite abrasive. That's his decision. Creating a thread singling out another member, however, is clearly out of line. Leaving it up for the sake of "interesting discussion" is also clearly out of line.
As for my suggesting a banning as opposed to merely a warning, I have seen similar posts by pamchenko in the past. While a banning may not have been warranted this time, a lock and warning was certainly called for.
