Well, it surpasses the V8's in the half-ton Chevy and Ford models; especially Ford.

Really? What are the numbers? I thought Chevy and Ford are in the 300+ range already. I'll bet Dodge may be slightly higher, but not by much.

For 1/2 tons (not counting froo froo models like King Ranch, Lightning, and Silverado SS ):

Dodge is at 345/375
Chevy is at 300/360
Ford is at 260/350

Too bad Dodge can't build a decent tranny to save it's life.

Close enough where it counts (tq). :) Although I think a Chevy V8 could be had with 350/450. Maybe in other models.

You can get the 345/380 V8 if you spring for the low-volume Silverado SS. But then if you wanna play like that, the Dodge Ram SRT-10 is 500/525 :D

GM offers the 8.1L V8 with 345hp and 455 lb.ft. in their heavy duty trucks.

*edit* but it's not available in the 1500HD. I thought it was.

I think you can get the 6.6 as an option in the Crapalanche.

Whoops. Looks like it's the 8.1L.

Well, I can say from personal experience that out of the two Chrysler minivans that my parents have owned, both have needed major (> $1,100) transmission work before 50,000mi.

Not a good track record.

I own a 2500 with a v-10 and can say with authority they suck. They overheat even with the absolutely huge trans cooler they come with. They also like blowing apart internaly. They just can't handle the stress. I had mine rebuilt almost as soon as I got it with durability in mind. ( was not broken yet ) It cost a pretty penny, but I have not blown it yet 23k miles later, and I drive hard. I have blown my rear dana 70 3 times though

I wish dodge would get with the program and either design a better automatic or go with the allison.

What makes the engine a "hemi"?

On most engines the valves are both on the same side of the combustion chamber, on Hemi engines they are on opposite side's. This makes the flow better in the chamber. (A Basic explaination)

Believe it or not, my old Mitsubishi 2.8 L MCA engine is a Hemi !

the 45RFE is prolly going to be their tranny of choice for the Hemi and it's not very impressive. if you can dispute it with any mechanical input I'll be happy to hear it :)

Even though it pisses you off it's still a fact (and I'm a fact man) :p, it's a piss poor tranny. in "Truckville" tranny's are more important then engine's. we have low compression Iron blocks anyway, they down't blow.

another thankyou, Evadman knows 1st hand too, it can be a GREAT truck... if you go aftermarket, and I'm not a Biased zealot like some people, you want FACTS on the GM parts I would like to see changed?

NP246, chain driven T-case... Dodge use's the NP241 and even weaker Chain driven one... Ford sadly, same boat, when the 205 (shift on the floor) gear driven T-case's left, that became all of the big 3's weak point, fortunantly it's not belt driven like Import SUV's are though :p

how do you get around this? All the serious guys know, you get an Atlas or a NP205 and an adapter kit if needed, Jeep guys are very familiar with it as they go through chain drives out like it's a tank of gas.

edit: basically you want your V-10, Hemi, or whatever to be ready for serious work, you make a few changes, you just have to go with the best foundation, right now if you are all out power, all 3 companies have great Diesels, but GM has the best tranny until we see what Fords new 5-speed does, in SB gas, the Hemi would be nice, but you better get kevlar in there and a better pump and valve body.

i've got a friend with a 2500LB auto and its still on all the original drive line components... of course he doesn't have the V-10 and i don't think that truck has hauled much

If you are gonna get a Ram 2500 and you plan on some real towing, not that eastern tenderfoot sh!t they do in NFS's town ;) and you are not gonna have it beefed up, get their manual, it's the best of the big 3.... but it's a manual, I'd rather hit the gas and just go when I'm trailering ;)
