Welcome zakee00!

A work unit (WU) is a generic term for data that you download from a server. The DC client (software application) does its thing to this data, (how do you spell analyzes? we say crunch) and then sends in the results to the server and gets another WU. You get points for every WU completed! :)

I have never ran BOINC, but I would guess that it is a graphic driver problem. Do you have the newest driver?

Also most graphic displays use lots of CPU cycles, that could be why the mouse pointer stutters.

But like amdxborg said "Where's the boinc people?", they would know for sure. Someone will be along shortly.

Sorry - I'm not running the BOINC version software for any of the projects, but I'm sure someone will be along shortly who does. In any event, welcome to the TeAm. :)

Think I agree with GLeeM, it sounds like a driver problem.
I can show the graphics no problem, and with no pointer stuttering on an Athlon XP 2600, 512 mb

Welcome zakee00!!

:beer::D:beer:

As far as I know, BOINC uses OpenGL to display its graphics. When was the last time you updated your gfx drivers? What card are you using? Nvidia, ATI, which model and what driver version? In case it's not OpenGL, do you have DirectX 9c installed? GIve us some more info so we canhelp you better.

Welcome, Dude.

I'm also working on Seti classic, so I can't help you out with your questions other than to say that the reason people get excited about WU is it's addicting to watch your numbers climbing amongst competition. Every couple of hours you've passed a handful of inactive or slow people. It's a way to contibute to science and compete without leaving the comfort of your desk.

welcome

SETI Classic allows you to join teams. Just know that SETI Classic is ending soon? and BOINC is the newer version/replacement.

Seti Classic is in a tight race and needs all the help it can get. They are trying to keep 5th place.

I am afraid there will be some more surprises before the end, so the further ahead the TeAm gets now the better.

I'm probably the last one to offer help, but have you attached to a project? "Settings"/"attach to a project" and enter URL and account ID. Then look in the work tab to see if you have work units being processed. If you are that far, it might help if you posted the log file (click on the "messages" tab). That might help some of the more knowledgeable people spot something.

Well, is normally running BOINC as service so can't run the screensaver... It will anyway crunch faster if you're not using the screensaver.

But, atleast NT4 does reportedly not show screensaver correctly, and for others make sure "go to blank screen" isn't set to 0 minutes. ;)

As for advantages of using the BOINC-version, appart for built-in caching and multi-cpu-support, the biggest advantage is every wu is normally only crunched by 4 different users, except if more than 1 misses deadline or have an error. In seti "classic" on the other hand, every wu have on average been crunched 7.98 times and the average is increasing, meaning BOINC is atleast 100% more effective.

If I was you, I'd just go for the classic by now and try to reach one of the lower milestones, like 250 or 500 before it ends. After that, you can decide if you want to give SETI another shot with BOINC or if you want to crunch on a completly different project. :)

Why do you crunch each seti classic work unit so many times ... are you running out of work for classic to do???
