She's in norway has xbox360, watched 1 eppy of office dvd's (region 1) i sent but now region is saying no go.

If i sent her xbox hd-dvd player, would that work?

Are you sending just the HD-DVD player? If its just the player it might work, not sure about software compatibility (a system lock, perhaps). If you're sending the entire xbox you'll run into problems with PAL and NTSC compatibility.

However, it may not fix the region issues. If I'm correct, the drive is just a dumb drive, its the firmware on the xbox itself that determines region. So you'll still run into region issues with an American HD-DVD player.

The easiest way to circumvent this is to just play it on a PC. However, if you need it to be on a DVD for the TV, you can always unlock it and reburn it in a region-free format (slightly more complicated).

dude thanks for the articulate response. It is only the hd-dvd drive... I thought the drive determined region...?

It'd be interesting to see if it worked, i don't really wanna gamble the $50 in shipping to find out. LOL.

yup reburn on pc
think its a combination of the drive and player that handle the region code..i dunno. after u decrypt it i think dvdshrink makes it region free automatically:p

plus if i ever got a region other than mine nromally it would involve pal to ntsc conversion so i had to fiddle with it anyways. perhaps norway is pal.

I'm pretty sure DVDShrink does region unlock a DVD.

And I don't think its the drive. If you think about it you should be able to buy a CD-drive anywhere around the world and plug it into your computer, and it still works the same way. The xbox is nothing more than a really embedded computer.

On that same note, can't you mod the software on the 360? I've never had a 360 so I can't comment on how it works.

well sorta, drives have a region code in their firmware.
its why there are 3rd party firmwares for dvd drives and such. course software players tend to be region free.

Why not just buy her a $20 dvd player and send it, along with a 220V to 120V power adapter.
