Hey everyone! First post here, although I've been @ guru3d.com/forum for awhile its been down! Anyways, has anyone had success overclocking an XP T-Bred Revision "A" processor? I know the T-Bred Bs are awesome, but can I get any speed outta this?

Here's my processor information:

AIUGA Stepping

Athlon XP Processor High-end
Core Thoroughbred-A
CPU Model 8
Manufacturing Process 130 nm
Approximate Transistor Count 37.2 million
Approximate Die Size 80 sq. mm
Performance Rating 1700+
Working frequency 1467 MHz
Package Type OPGA
Operating Voltage 1.5 V
Max Die Temperature 90° C
L1 Cache Size 128 KB
L2 Cache Size 256 KB
Multiplier 11x
FSB Frequency 266 MHz
Stepping Code AIUGA
Manufacture Year 2002
Manufacture Week 41
Production Batch M
Batch Production Number 0421

One more thing, the core is a red color. I heard that was okay for overclocking, also my processor suppousidly would have been sold as a 2700+ at the factory. So, I think!

Welcome to Anandtech.

You have an 'A' core, not a 'B' core. What you said at the bottom about the 2700 was a rumour about the XP1700 B cores. I dont know if this is still a rumour or is true or not. You can count on getting a mild OC on it, but not huge like the new 'B' cores. I think people were getting 1.7-1.8GHz out of these, but I dont remember which specific steppings or anything though. Still, not a bad OC.

1.7-1.9 would be the range for your oc
more towards the end of 1.7-1.8 mainly since that is where most a cores maxxed out at
you may get lucky and get a 1.8-1.9, but that isnt to say that you will

a good oc nonetheless

Hey thanks, do you have one that you have overclocked? Anyways any good heatsinks you could recommend? I am thinking of the Cooler Master HHC-001, the Vantec Aeroflow or a X Dream! Let me know whats successful for you with processors. I got a MSI kt3ultra 2 by the way...

the best coolers right now have to be the ones w/o fans but are just the heatsink

so the swiftech mcx .... i dont' remember the number

and the thermalright slk800(a or u)

good fan is the variable ys tech fan or the tt smart (dumb) fan 2

the tbred a.. you should be able to get maybe 1900 mhz if you're lucky.. and 2.0 ghz if you're EXTREMELY lucky

0310's are the best as shady stated before... at least from the 4 or 5 0310's i've tested, all have done over 2.4 ghz

and if you want a high fsb, like around 200ish, get an nforce2 board
unless you're fine with 166mhz and a high mult (would have to enable that via modding im pretty sure)

thanks. Yup, I have seen the slk series too expensive for me! Anyone got a Vantec Aeroflow? My friend seems to have success with his.

I've been using the AeroFlow for both AMD and P4 and it's good price/performance cooler and not too noisy, especially for a 5600rpm fan. You can get it@
Computergate for less than 26$ shipped 3day if you don't live in Cali.

The Thermalright SK7 and a low- medium speed fan will perform just as well as the aeroflow if not better, be about the same price and be quieter.

I have overclocked the 1700+ TBred A with HHC-001 (sounds like a vacuum cleaner...seriously) and I got to around 1.9GHz stable. But for one to hit 1.9GHz on an A core is like one to hit 2.4GHz with a non 0310 X/WPMW B core on air cooling. It's a tough job and most can do it with the right equipment (and 1.85 VCore).

Suggestion for cooling: Don't go with the HHC-001. The TT Volcano 9 is much better and much more silent. If you still want one though, I'll sell it to ya :p

thanks, yea my friend has liked the aeroflow! Anyways, is it real bad to up the voltage to like 1.85 volts. I know its at 1.49 default now. Anyways, will this up PCI/AGP voltage and memory? I have a MSI Kt3 Ultra 2. I got crappy 266 Pny memory? Anyone overclock PNY memory w/ infinion chips?
