offer their guests raw potatoes as a snack? In fact i just finished eating one not 5 minutes ago.
They're good, and i have been eating raw peeled russets since i was a kid. Maybe by me kicking the idea around Atot it will start a trend. What do you think? "

People just aren't used to raw potatoes.

Next time you throw a party, offer them up. Then post here about how it went.

OK ....."hey everybody how is the party? Here have a raw peeled potato for a snack"

Another one of my favorite snacks is 'white bread balls'. Take 3 pieces of moist white bread tear off and discard( or eat if you must) the crust and roll up the remaining bread 'centers' into a nice ball and eat.

Maybe i'll offer those the next time i have guests.

same reason you dont offer raw meat, because it probably doesnt taste as good as the cooked thing.

I beg to differ. Steak Tartare is awesome. I occassionally host dinner parties and it's a great thing to share with people who aren't comfortable with it at Restaurants - you can take special care when selecting the meat and it's quite a wonderful dish when done right.

I'm pretty sure that potatoes don't work very well raw because of the high starch content. Perhaps the amount of amylase that your mouth produces is not sufficient to digest them in their raw form. But once you cook them... it must help - my nutrition knowledge isn't quite *that* acute.

What about 'hamburger tartare' is that just as good as steak tartare?

Used to do that as a kid. If you keep in your mouth long enough, it'll start to taste very sweet.

Yeah, I enjoy a bit of raw potato, too. Usually grab a bit when I'm getting them ready for cooking, but don't eat a lot at once. I have found few people who agree, though.
