My friend drives a 5sp acura integra. In 4th gear, the gear pops out of 4th. But the issue isnt with any other gear.

New clutch?

sounds like syncros are shot... he'll probably need to replace the synchronizer for that gear.

on this truck its 50 bucks...plus labor of course. It might be more expensive for the integra though.

The shift synchronizer in my '92 eclipse cost $1800 to fix. Fortunately it had 50 miles left on the warranty :D

Shift fork, most likely not the syncro unless it grinds while going into gear as well.

The syncro itself costs anywhere from 50-200. Labor will be anywhere from 600-1500.
Shift fork is probably a near price to that.

wow really? My cousin is about to buy a 92 eclipse for $1200 that has the same issue as my friends integra. Not worth buying is it?

just hold it down......my 1st gear pops out on my 4runner, it's not bad since i don't ever just drive with 1st, just comming out of a stop....so i shift fairly soon, might be a bit more annoying with the 4th

What do you mean by 'pops out' ? Never driven a manual, that's why I'm asking. A few times when I accelerate rapidly, my camry (automatic) shifts to neutral on its own (the stick's still on drive though). Same problem?

I can't say for sure. The problem I had was that it would shift fine sometimes, and other times (mainly going into 2nd) it would give a massive, huge grinding noise. I am going by what the others in the thread are saying about it being the syncro. If it is the shift synchronizer, the entire transmission needs to be taken out, which is massively labor intensive. Look at the car places around, see if you can get an estimate. Just make sure he knows the cost isn't going to be $200 to fix.

If he still decides to go with it, they'll have it torn down all the way to the clutch plate when they are replacing the synchronizer. For another $100 they'll swap out the clutch too, and it should be no labor charge to drop it in at the same time. Tell him to do himself a favor and get the clutch replaced while they're in there.

Also, I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but mine was the GSX AWD. No idea if the FWD cars need the same ammount of work.
