Hey guys - I've got $500 I'm tired of...

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but a bunch of folks yacked up alot of money for ads and such. We've still got about $500.

What do you want to do with it?

/me thinks you should auction it off to the highest bidder! 😛

Seriously now, put up some advertising wherever you can get a good deal.

We've been there already with marginal success. I don't know of a single recruit we got off that advertising. Maybe... but I'm not aware of any.

I'm looking for some team brainstorming here. I'm betting with the sheer amount of mental power here alone, we can figure something out.

c'mon, c'mon - let's hear some ideas.

Buy a dual Athlon MB and have Anandtech give it away in a contest for team members.

That should get some people to join.

I can't believe no one has thought of... BRIBING DNET WITH THE $500!!! :Q Just think of the possibilities there!

...all right, you guys know me better than to take that suggestion seriously. We should invest in some good coffeemakers instead. 😉

I agree with Curt... A contest is probably the best way to recurit members. How much trouble would it be to get a contest going? Say, first *new* member to xxx blocks/WU's get's $$$, second place $$$, etc. The hardest part would probably be promtion because we really don't have any official support. 🙁

The Wall Street Journal Online has over 500K paid subscribers. Even if only 2% of those "highbrows" have rooms full of computers, that's still 10,000+ people. And of those 10,000+, if only 2% decide to help our cause that's still 200+ new people.

It's worth a shot, right?

ßGød had a really good idea, but I'll let him post that. [edit] geez, he's quick

I tend to agree somewhat about the contest idea. It's the individual recruiting efforts of team members that are the basis of growth. We should reward individual recruitment in some form of simple, yet verifiable contest.

Definately a "woot" for Bgod's idea.😀

PS Should you find no way to use the money, there's allways the TA.com fund 😱

Advertising on the Journal sounds like a good plan! Although I don't think $500 will buy us much on that high-brow site. 🙁 Plus we might be missing our "target audience" there. But I think of all the places to advertise, that's a great one.

How about we put aside $50 to bribe Anand into keeping a small blurb about all the TA DC projects on the front page. The TA teams are HUGE compared to some of the other "officially supported" website teams. There's a small link for RC5, and that's about it. 🙁

Surely a little banner, or maybe having it cycle through the "Hottest Article" box(or whatever it is) would bring in a few people each day.

It does cycle through the "featured article." He also said he'd be putting the link back up for the distributed computing teams.

We of the Cardassian Empire have a plan--combine Ottawanker's and Narzy's ideas with DanC's money:

Use the $500 to purchase two nodes of a TeamAnandtech crack rack to be housed at some yet to be determined location. If folks buy into Ottawanker's plan of contributing a few bucks per month to the effort, the number of nodes in the crack rack could grow over time. This crack rack would be special, though, in that it wouldn't crack for any specific individual on a consistent basis, but rather, as per Narzy, could be used to provide a week's worth (two week's worth? whatever!) of cracking for new members to the TeAm. That way all of the output would go to the TeAm AND "crack newbies" would get a running start and a taste for what having heavy metal cracking power is like.

As a Cardassian Gul, receiving "charity" such as this is beneath me, of course, but might serve as an inducement to some of the "lesser species" of the galaxy. 😀

I remember when Anand first put up the Dist Comp article, T.A. S@H was getting 20 - 40 new members a day...

🙂

That article is too outdated at this point and should be taken out of the circulation until updated properly, in fact the Gamma Flux section that I worked on is now just a history lesson.

Perhaps offering the $500 to AnandTech for ad space on the front page will drive home the point?

Osmo.

osmo: i was thinking about ad space on anandtech actually.. or actually, something more like a contest on the front of anandtech.. "join TA (your choice of OGR/RC5/Seti) for 2 months and get a chance to win a [insert prize here]".

Have we previously considered advertising on www.linux.org. The site attacts the type of folks that are more likely to be interested in a dnet project.

[edit] One of their current advertisers is www.distributed.net. Obviously d.net considers the target audience of that site to be appropriate. [/edit]

osmo you gotta love the in-the-face tactic, i would love to see anand's face if that happened!
RC has a point too, i like it, no geeks read the WSJ

I agree with ottawanker! Give Anand the money for the prize(s) and have him run it from the front page. If we could get him involved it would be the best advertising that money could buy!

I know this is wishful thinking, but I would give it a shot first. Ya never know! 😉

Have a contest for new members.

Say that in order for the contest to have any winners. 50 new people must join, once that is reached, the contest begins. Over a 30 day period, you must crack as much as possible. The person with the most blocks at the end of the 30 day period gets $100, 2nd gets 75, and third gets 50. Now for the fun part. For each new member you recruit for the contest, you get $5. For each person that joins over 50, the winners get $5 more for eack prize amount. In order to claim your money, you most keep cracking after the game contest period, or Russ will be sent to your house with a Ak47 and HE grenades to blow your ass off. We will ask permision from the mods to post the contest info thread in all of the forums.

All $ amounts can be changed as need be!

/Andrew

My idea😱?

No, It will be fine. You see the money you get from cracking has nothing to do with it, it is just a present from us for your hard work😉
