...and created a super-flu virus? I know the symptoms of SARS and flu are pretty similar but I've heard they are very different viruses (different shape and different cell-attachment mechanism etc) But is there any chance that the outbreak of SARS and the powerful flu are correlated? Has this been discussed before?
 
Quick answer: I really doubt it since they're not similar virii. I think we're just dealing with an especially nasty flu strain this year. However, I'm not a virologist by trade, so I'll have to dig around for a more definitive answer tomorrow once I'm at work and have access to knowledgeable people I can pester.

Trust me, it's not that easy or someone would have done it already. Basic gene sequencing/cloning techniques are well within the grasp of the average bio undergrad.

 
I know, fausto. I'm parodying the asscroft minions who are trying to limit our university's experimental biology research on those grounds.
