Hey Christians: do you tithe 10 percent?

Just curious.

I got a buddy of mine who's a baptist, almost makes six figures...and surpringly gives 10% to the church. He says you should give 10%.....or at least give till it hurts. God knows when its hurting you, he says.

He also says the weekly offerings do NOT count. You may or may not give weekly.
But he says tithing at 10% is a matter of obedience.

I understand that a lot of Christians use the 10% rule. And it is supposed to be 10% of GROSS... or you are putting the government before taxes. I am all for the 10% rule, but I do not give to churches. I support soldiers thru packages to Iraq, give a LOT of money to animal charities and do other stuff that totals more than 10%... not cause God demands it, but cause it is the right thing to do.

When I was younger and went to Church every Sunday... I always felt uncomfortable when the collection basket was passed around.

Since my family is Irish, it almost goes hand in hand that I was raised catholic. Church 8am every sunday, altar boy, lector, catholic school till 8th grade, and honestly I really think that the religion itself is going down the tubes. Needs lots more change/reform, but I realy dont see it happening anytime soon.

And before anyone asks, I was never molested, thank you very much.

i dont practice a religion, but background wise im christian....if i was religious i wouldnt tithe, i would however put my hand in my pocket whenever my local place of worship needed money for something.....

We tithe but it's less than 10% right now. Our tithes go to the Church, several Mexican orphanages, and to the campus ministry my wife and I went through. We would like to tithe more but it's a hard thing to do, not because it's impossible but because we are both happy consumers.

My mom tithes 10-12% religiously. (pun intended )
She's told me the more you give to God selflessly, the more you receive in return.
It's not about how much money you give, but more a test of your faith.
I never really believed it until recently.

30% of my gross wages goes to the Chruch of the United States Department of Taxiation and Finance.
10% goes to the New York State Dept. of Tax and Finance.

Chruch/Government, same thing, fill you up with false beliefs and promises, use scare tatics to get you to see their way, and are always sitting there with their hand out.

There is one wacko Baptist church in town that has slots on the back wall with family names on the slots. I was told that people are to put their envelopes with their tithe in the slot so it is known who has given and who hasn't. Basically pressuring people into keeping up with their tithe.

Supposedly their church has assigned parking spots too, so you know who is there and who isn't at a glance.

Though I go to church, I don't believe in giving to churches. They tend to waste a lot of money, and it doesn't really end up helping anyone except for the congregation. My money will be going to charities for special needs children and local soup kitchens.

A local church here which has grown from a few hundred people to about 3,000 in a year interviews couples before they allow you to worship. No divorced people regardless of reason are accepted. They make you fill out a 40+ question questionaire, then do several interviews. It is like applying for a job, all so you can choose to worship a god of your choosing??

I don't think any God would approve of what has happened to their religion in these modern times.

As long as you follow your religion's teachings, and believe with your heart, then you should be fine. Giving money does not mean you are a good follower or more religious than others.

Churches are no less a business than your local Starbucks.

I think giving 10% to charity of any sort should almost be a societal norm. It doesnt' need to be to a religious organization if that's not your thing, but give to those who need it regardless.

Anyway, I'm a Christian and probably tithe about 5%, but the church get's about 6 hours/week out of me with different involvements, so that makes up for it.

Same here...brought up Roman Catholic, church every saturday night (went to grandparents on sunday morning), religion school after normal school (my mom taught it).

I'll definately say that the RC religion needs to make some SERIOUS reforms before it gets flushed in the annals of history.

That is really really bad.
I remember when I was young... the church used to give out little envelopes during confession on Saturday to put tithe money in for Sunday. It was ok. There was nothing on the outside so no one knew who gave what. But once the envelopes were dont away with... everyone watched who put what in the basket. Probably why they did away with the envelopes. It was very uncomfortable.

10% is actually just a "religious" installment, not what the original text said/implied. The original text described "first fruits" not a specifically set percentage of your monthly or yearly income. Furthermore, the original text doesn't say anything about giving directly to the church, either. You could be taking whatever you feel led to tithe and walking it down to a homeless shelter or donating it to charity or giving it to some homeless guy you see at random.

By all means tithe, but don't think that if you tithe anything other than 10% that it's some kind of sin.
