In a workgroup network setup, if you are using a router with some ports, ip addresses will be assigned automatically by its dhcp server and the default gateway address will be the router's address, but in the case of using an unmanaged switch, how are ip addresses assigned? Manually for each client? I'm asking because I haven't setup a workgroup network before with only a switch.

Thanks.

You have a couple of options here.

You could do it manually, but that will suck if you get a lot of new computers/devices coming in and out.

You could make a DHCP server out of one of the computers one the switch (or even a virtual machine running on one of the machines on the switch).

You could purchase a cheap router with DHCP and let it handle the requests (plug it into the switch.

Just make sure you only have 1 DHCP server on the network. Having multiple causes bad things to happen.

Sounds like getting a decent (for example linksys) router is the way to go then....Just like everybody does with his home Internet network.
