Hey benchmarkers, how much is your "Value Mark?"

I was chatting with an acquaintence about our new system upgrades. He had purchased an Athlon 64 3500+, Gigabyte SLI motherboard, 2Gb DDR400 RAM, and a Radeon X850XT PCI-E video card. He was quite proud of his 3DMark05 score.

I suggested he perform the following calculation:

3DMark05 Score/($mb+$RAM+$CPU+$VidCrd) = 3DMark05 points per dollar ratio

I spent $663 on an MSI RS480M2-IL, Athlon 64 3000+, 1Gb DDR400 Dual Channel Kit, a Radeon X800XL, and shipping.

My 3DMark05 score was 4792 at standard clockspeeds, resulting in a 7.23 points per dollar ratio. My acquaintence didn't want to continue our conversation at that point.

I'm just curious if anybody else out there knows what their points to dollars ratio is for 3DMark05?

Here's mine:

3DMark05 Score: 4976 Marks (Stock EVERYTHING)

Mobo: $135 shipped (Monarch Computer)
RAM: $160 shipped (NewEgg)
CPU: $185 shipped (Monarch Computer)
Video Card: $180 shipped (eBay)

So, here's my ratio: 7.54 marks per dollar. I guess thats not bad, is it?

3DMark05 Score: 4170

DFI Lanparty UT NF3-250GB: $100 shipped (Newegg)
2x512MB Geil PC3200 Golden Dragon: $160 shipped (NewEgg)
s754 Sempron 2800+ @ 2.6ghz: $90 shipped (Monarch)
eVGA 6800NU @ 350/835 16p/6v: $200 shipped (eBay)

My points to dollar ratio is 7.58 😀

No offense, but this is pretty worthless. The main reason is because 3dmark is.

3DMark isn't pointless, its a good way to gauge system changes (such as overclocks, upgrades, etc.). I do think people use it too much for bragging rights, but it is, nonetheless, usefull.

BTW: Post #300 (boy, not that long ago, I was just a baby 😉 )

damn, geforcetony, that's one hell of a deal on the 6800GT!

Yeah, you're tellin' me. I practically STOLE the damn thing. All of my friends want to friggin kill me 'cause of that, but, hey. Sometimes you just get lucky 😀

Really? How many more points to you get going from 512, to 1gig of ram? How many more points do you get going from a 2.4gig P4 to a 3.4gig P4? Not nearly as much of a difference as you would in a game.

I manage a gigantic 913 point difference between my A64 underclocked to 1GHz and overclocked to 2.65GHz 🙂

I don't mind 3DM, it has it's uses... isn't exactly a particularly good indicator of real world gaming performance though.

3850 (high quality, 3dmark05)
270+240+340+330=1180

cpu was at stock speed
ram was at stock speed
video card was overclocked as much as possible.

3850/1180=3.26 3dmarks/dollar

I think I could have got a lot of my components cheaper which would have equated to a possible $200-300 savings. I paid premium just because I was sick and tired of waiting, and I don't really regret doing it. $270 for a A8N-SLI Deluxe, $240 for 1gb pqi turbo ram, $340 for graphics card, $330 for cpu (really overpriced). When you want performance, prices definitely aren't linear on the higher end of things. However, I spent only about $1600 on a system I probably would have paid $3000 for somewhere else (Alienware, barf 😕 ) for equal performance. If I had spent my money on that system TODAY on newegg.com, the prices would be:

199+250+275+289=1013
3850/1013=3.80 3dmarks/dollar

Still not exactly stunning. I'll have to wait 'til I get in the overclocking mood.

Update:

1013/5201=5.13 3dmarks/dollar after overclocks

If I recall correctly my old PC was something like 2400 3dmarks.

160+70+170+200=600
2400/600=4
Nice and even. 4 3dmarks/dollar

Not as good as I thought.

Bump. Come on, we need some more "value marks".

3DMark05 score is around 3000 or so.
The cost of my computer, 10$.
MSI RS480M2
AMD 3500+ Winnie
MSI 6600GT
2GB of DDR400, Samsung + Hynix.

So, 300 marks / dollar.
^_^

Hehe, no real argument here, Ackmed. I just though it would be a fun way to compare value. Sorry if I upset you.

Hehe, you are truly the AmEx Platinum Card carrying customer that the computer industry loves and adores, malak!
