I got a simillar set up but more tuned for the gaming feel.
Soud card is Creative PC128
Interconnects to the Amp which is a Pioneer A-302R. 4X150Watts.
4 speakers in the front and 2 rear.
Front:
2 Sony HiFi speakers taking 150Watts, with built in Sub.
2 Sony Midrange speakers taking 100Watts.

Rear:
2 Mission M71 Midrange/tweeters. Taking 75Watts.

I never crank my amp past 3/4 of the way because:

1. It would be too loud anyway.
2 The Missions could blow up, and that would cost alot of money to replace.

Thats my setup and I am proud of it!

This thread is for home stereo. On my comp I have a Sb Live ValueII and Creative FPS2000 speakers for gaming, which aren't even close to Audiophile. If I crank my home system past 10 O'clock for long my ears will start ringing.

Hmm. My home stereo is OLD, full of what used to be good but cheap stuff like a NAD amp, paradigm speakers, and a Nakamichi tape deck (remember cassette tapes?).

No speakers for my computer. I use Sennheiser 495's and a headphone amp hooked up to my sound card.

Well I rigged it with my PC and a Sony HiFi stuck on the top so all I have to do is press the function button on the remote or the front of it to change channels from the HiFi and the PC.

SKY2KLAU: I can never crank my amp above 2/5, although it's still crystal clear it's too loud with the active sub thumping away.

I've also got Base Shakers, which are attached to a hardwood easy chair. They are designed to shake the chair with a very low(hertz wise) bass signal. Give me a headache after 10 minutes though, great for parties because every one can have a go..

I have never ever gone full way and the most I ever went to was 3/4 when some of my friends were over for a little party. The amp got pretty hot afterwards! It was should I say warm not hot. My large Sony speakers do the bass so I don't really need a Subwoofer. When playing games I never have them too loud or I can't even hear myself think!

Oh and the chair shaker is good for Quake3 or Unreal Tournament when you got alot of explosions and gun fire and stuff!

Custom sub powered with a 500 watt Hafler.
Not my exact sub, but it will give you the idea:
custom IB sub
Legacy Focus for mains.
PSB Ambients for surrounds.

You are right. The Thomas's site is down, but come back and check it out. He is one of the best DIY speaker builders out there and runs the IB forum. My mains have 3, 12" drivers each, so they are truely full range. What I need a sub to do is 10hz to 40hz. This take a lot of power, and a lot of drivers. Tom Nousaine build a nice IB system using 8, 15" TC-Sounds subs. That is over $2,000 in drivers alone. Thomas W. built a similar system using 12, 12" Audire Audio Shiva drivers.

My pleasure, Scope!

The last HT system I put together was in 1987. Just got the bug again recently. I knew which monitor I wanted, but not the balance. Fortunately, I had the good sense to ask that same question in Off Topic. Smartest thing I ever did. Got lots of great responses, links and help in general. Do check out that link if you're in the market!

One thing I discovered that is worth a fortune, is that Sears will price match E-tailers. Whoa, that is fantastic! If the stuff you buy doesn't suit ya, it's easy to return. You don't have to wait for it to ship and for me, Sears is right next door! :)

My greatest joy with this whole system is the low prices paid for it all. Just sounds sweeter every time I lop $10, $20 or even $200 off the total by price matching. Here's what I ended up with:I'll be taking another $60 off that WEGA price, because I found it cheaper at a couple places. You've got 30 days to play that game with Sears. Oh, what fun!

When I shop around for and buy stereo gear it's for sound quality and fullness not ear bleeding volume, granted my system at 11 o'clock on the dial will make u wanna turn it down. I was gonna upgrade my speakers to B&W CDM 9NT's but I decided to go the home theatre route. The shop where I get my gear has an upgrade program. You get full value of what you paid on your components back within 12 months of purchase and for every month after 12 months you loose 1% per month. So you can see it's very easy to build an excellent system over the period of 3-4 years. I'm still so tempted to keep with the music system and I would add a sub to get nice clean lows. Just some random babbling on my part. ;)

Sony V333ES Receiver $525
Sony DVP-S9000ES DVD/SCD Player $1299
Klipsch RF3 Mains $565
Klipsch RC3 Center $263
Klipsch RS3 Surrounds $379
Klipsch KSW10 Subwoofer $239

Having difficulty deciding on a TV to pair with my new DVD player. Don't really want to spend 2 grand on a TV. Do any of the Wega's, besides the XBR support progressive scan? If not, any recommendations for a TV that does for a reasonable price?

My girfriend's dad has a pair of Klipsch Heresy's. Very good on the highs[horns] but they are older speakers and they lack the lower end punch of newer speakers. I think that's a function of when they were made, back in the late 70's when people weren't obsessed with bass. If I turn up the bass level on the preamp they seem to kick out enough to balance the fantastic highs of the horns. Personally I'm not huge on bass, but overall clarity of the sound.

Basically, my home stereo system is the Bose Lifestyle 25 supplemented by a Pioneer 525 DVD; a JVC VCR; A Kenwood dual cassette deck; an Akai reel-to-reel deck (quad); and a Sony XBR 36" TV.

My 2 Missions got top marks in one of the best UK mags What HiFi and the Sony's a pretty good they got about 4 stars out of five. The Missions got Gold starts out of 5 which means they got the highest in a certain test. When it comes to sound systems I go for a balance. Same which cars as well, even though I am too young to drive (Me Only 16). But I go for balance on Looks, and practicallity. In the sence of Looks with sound systems it would be quality. And for Practicallity it would be output/volume. My sound system, or more like nagging my dad to get it for me, is a pretty good balance from all sides.

I like to stick with my mags of What HiFi. The reason is that some of the audio companies in the US are not in the UK. And the same thing the other way round. So sticking with the mag is a more accurate guide! But thanks for the link anyway!

Actually if you want a mag that is totally unbiased and tells it how it is check out UHFMag. Wicked read.
