EDIT: Added OC score, Cod2...

My system:
A64 Venice 3000@2.25ghz (mild OC only 250mhz bus)
1024 ram @ 2-3-3-6-1t
Epox 9nPA Ultra+

I have owned my 6800GT (PCIe) for a couple of months now. Well my friend wanted my video card so I went out and bought a new 7800GT. Nothing changed except the video card. (note: I don't bench 3dmark all the time so my scores might not be "optimized", I am running WHQL drivers)

Before:
eVGA 6800GT (390/1070) Was overclocked of course.
3dmark05: 5500

After:
eVGA 7800GT CO (470/1100) Stock overclock from eVGA. GPU was supposed to be 460!
3dmark05: 7421

EDIT
New 2/6/06
3dMark05
Same card, higher clock...
3dmark05: 8014 :)

eVGA 7800GT CO Overclocked (495/1154) "Detect optimal"
3dmark05: 7808

Definately a good speed improvement. I thought if there are any other 6800GT owners on the fence deciding wether to sell and upgrade this might be some use. The card just came in an hour ago so I haven't had a chance to play anything on it yet.
EDIT:
Call of Duty runs MUCH better in Directx 9 mode. I still play it at 1280, but it runs MUCH better.

So lets you and I be friends .... I would be interested in the 7800GT when you tire of it. Kthxbye buddy !!

Yea, the 3Dmark05 is very much GPU intensive, with the '03 edition being a better balance of CPU and GPU scores. No surprise at all that your scores went up dramatically. Have you tried OC'ing the 7800 yet ?? EVGA warranty covers an overclock FYI, so you are good to go there. I have a 6800 and plan on buying that same card in a month. No need to, as CoD2 runs fine, but .. dammit ... I just like upgrading.

Red, I agree with you on CoD2, but I left it autoconfigure for my rig, so I was running it at 1024 with no AA/AF, so thats why it was acceptable on my rig. To run native on my LCD at 1280, I would need the addtnl horsepower of the 7800GT.

No reply from you yet on the friend thing ... ahem ... ;)

Haven't tried overclocking it yet. Will try soon.
As far as performance goes, I was pretty happy with the exception of CoD2 in Dx9 mode. That game ran like a dog at 1280 (in DX9 mode only!).

Yeah, eVGA's warranty is great. If you are going to buy a new 7800GT, get it here.

I just got it in today and it is the highest clocked GT card I could find and it was only 299 shipped. It also came with quake 4 on DVD.

Link works now...

$299 shipped...that's tempting but I have no money (I have an AGP 6800GT myself still). I doubt I could get over $200 for my current card were I to sell it...

Bah I have my BFG 6800GT AGP and love it but have been considering upgrading. My issue as you can well tel is that I am stuck with an AGP board and would need to spring for a freaking PCI express which would in all likelyhood cause me to reinstall my OS and such (which all runs like a dream). Also I was told and from extensive research that anything short of a 7800 GTX is simply NOT worth it from a 6800 GT (that oc'ed even higher). Your numbers seem nice.... i am more concerned with older games such as EQ and such so I am still not sure if even 7800 GTX would really show any sort of improvement.

me too !!!!!! have a 6800GT AGP on my server machine which is also used for occasional gaming (on linux). Needless to say, my gaming rig with the 7800 GTX is worlds better. 6800GT starts to falter on 1600x1200 and beyond if you want high quality settings in new games.

Yeah, the 7800 is a nice line, although personally I'd not buy one right now. Wait for the 7900's to come out and the 7800's should probably drop in price as well.

Same thing that happened to the 6800 series when the 7800's came out.

Exactly. (I have a 2005FPW so it's 1680x1050 for me, but close enough.) There's no way I could even think about running FEAR at native resolution, and at times even older stuff like HL2 (especially with HDR) and FarCry runs kinda slowly at that resolution. I can deal with it for now, as it's not too bad yet (plus like I said, I have no money :p), but I'll definitely be replacing it within the year.

At least I won't have to swap out motherboards again to use a PCI-E card :p

yeah, I was fine until I got my 2005FPW.... upgraded from a 17" LCD which had a native res od 1280.

Since then I upgraded my video card twice. That "hotdeal" ended up costing me a lot more then I bargined for ;)

Cliff notes:

17" LCD -> 2005FPW = 9800pro -> X800 Pro -> 6800GT -> 7800GT

Holy crap, Red !!! No way in Hell you are gonna enjoy gaming on that seventy one inch LCD !!! Whats the native resolution ??? 5120 x 4096 ??????

Unfortunately, an LCD purchase has that same added, errrm ... benefit ... as I am quickly finding out. No problems out of the native resolution (to my eyes at least) but I'm not running AA/AF where it would be most noticeable.

Lol, yeah... 71" ;)
(I just noticed I joined 8 days after you heh!)

But even though these newer LCDs scale very well, I still feel the need to run at the native resolution. Or at least that is how I justify it.

If it's an AGP card you might be surprised by how much they fetch. Mine went for $320 on ebay about two weeks ago, $20 more than each of my 7800 GTs cost me over a month earlier (same cards as the OP). :D

RedBeard: Get a Arctic Cooling NV Silencer or the upcoming Accelero. Just about silent.

BTW-I hit 8198 @ 485/1150 :D. I could OC higher, but this OC is stable for BF2.

Congrats

OK, Redbeard ... I no longer require your friendship. :D I just bought my own 7800. I am leaving the card (518-AX) at stock settings for now, as no game I play requires that much power to run well. I scored 7800 in 3dMark05 which is a HUGE jump from my previous 4k mark with my 6800 vanilla. I did take adavantage of the deal to score the EVGA mobo for about $40 (yea, they say it was free with the card, but do the math and its gonna cost $40 more) so I now need to find an X2 3800+ or an Opty 170 to drop in that.

Excellent card but after benching it, just like everry vid card upgrade, I end up questioning why I bothered to upgrade if my gaming needs don't require it. I guess I shall consider it a future investment and be happy with that.
