I have this laptop brought in to me for repair, someone put a bios password on it and I cant get past the screen. Is there a CMOS Battery or something on laptops, or do i have to do something else? Any help will be appreciated. thanks.

uh i had the same problem when i boutght my laptop... i used a small dos application to reset the bios lemme see if i can find it...try this

and here are a few more bios specific files LINK

There would have to be a battery. How easy it would be to get at I have no idea. You check under the hard drive?

tried that, also, the hd seems to have something loose in side it, some piece is loose or something, because i took it out and moved it slightly, and something was loose, weird, ruined?

I bet he is getting smacked in the back of the head. 😀

The battery has to be somewhat accessable for users to change the battery.

I just read the entire manual online and it did not even mention the cmos battery. It said that there is a reset switch inside a hole. Not going to do us much good. I remember an old IBM computer my mom had would clear the CMOS by holding down both mouse buttons while turning it on. Might be something like that. I would try to contact hp tomorrow if I were you.

Call HP, they can give you a pass from the serial.

The story sounds a little fishy, make sure you are not dealing with a stolen laptop

If I didnt know him well enough to trust him about stealing a laptop, I surely wouldnt help crack a password on one....

I have that same laptop, and went thru the same problem.
if you have the boot up password enabled, the only way to redo it is to pull the main battery and leave it unplugged for as long as 30 days. this is what HP told me. if you just have the bios password enabled and not the boot up password, then you can still boot to dos and use a little program called killcmos or one similar to reset your bios settings. that works. that is what I had to do. anyway that is what HP told Me.

where is the battery located? turn on private msgs man , oh, lol, main battery, lame!! 30 days, there is no cmos battery? that is suck man. oh yah, how long did u wait before plugging the battery back in?

I didn't have to pull the main battery. the only password I had forgotten was the one preventing you from getting into the bios. I new the other password to boot up so I used KillCmos to reset the bios back to default, in turn erasing the bios protect password.
