Hertz Car Rentals

Scarpozzi

Just wanted to say... I'm looking for a rental car next year and noticed that hertz is about double the cost of other companies from the airport I'm flying into....even more expensive than competition with their Cyber Monday deal of 40% off. They are officially boycotted! Bad company.

Avis, National, Enterprise, and others are all $30-60 cheaper for a one day rental. That is all....do your research.

it has always been a crapshoot for me and seemed to depend on time and location

sometimes in the past i've gotten a much better deal with national or avis than hertz, but other times the opposite was true

the last rental i did was about 20$ cheaper per day with hertz vs all the others... though they did swap my small car rental out for a stupid mom van, which i was kinda ticked about. but it was alright in the end.

i just always hit up all the companies when i rent, make sure to check for all the coupons and discounts, and go with whoever's cheapest

hertz actually got me the best rental deal of my life a few years ago - drive from arizona back to my midwest home for 600$ straight up. it required the use of some airline club group code, but joining that club was free.

so i drove all over the US and put over 4000 miles on that sucker

it was glorious when i returned it in my town and the guy did the mileage calculation LOL

Yeah....there's that. But I'm just talking about how I hate 'deceptive' charges. They tack on all these hidden fees. The rental I'm looking at for ONE day is maybe $96....plus $100 in fees. Other rental places are about $50 less in the fees/taxes.

I'm tempted to give Turo a try.

I've never had that issue with Hertz. I tend to search Expedia first which lists all the fees and taxes upfront. By "fees" are you referring to the damage waiver (insurance)? If so, a credit card with damage waiver benefit is your best friend.

Big Box Rental car companies (Avis, Hertz, National, etc...) are all high dollar rentals. They are just like hotels, only book them if you know the corporate discount codes 😉

I consistently get better deals and free upgrades with Dollar. Sometimes Avis, but Dollar always seems to come through.

My best score at Dollar was last year at McCarran Int. in Vegas when I booked a Honda CRV and they upgraded me to a Cadillac Escalade hybrid. It had MASSAGING SEATS! 😀

Usually I find Enterprise to be the cheapest of the big rental companies but even they tack on a bunch of fees. Used to have good luck with Hertz but they really have priced themselves out of the market at least in my local area.

One thing you might want to try is going through an auto dealer. Not sure of all the companies that offer rentals but every time I've gone through Toyota its been a near-zero mile loaded car at a fair price.

My Uncle runs a tour company and rented some trucks with unlimited mileage. Returned them a few weeks later with about 30k miles on them.

Check out Costco travel for some great deals on car rentals. I typically rent from Alamo when I fly into FLL and drive down to the Keys, and using Costco the past 2 times saved me like 50%.

Also when renting cars out of the country, don't use the American companies like Hertz, Alamo, etc. They are all different franchises and go by different rules, and if you have problems with them, calling corporate in the USA won't help at all. The local companies to the countries are typically better and cheaper too.

I use Kayak to search for domestic and international car rental fares and usually just pick the lowest price. For domestic, I also always check Costco Travel because sometimes they have awesome car rental deals and Costco is not listed on Kayak.

Something you have to consider if you rent international is some countries require you to have International Driver's Permit and won't rent to you if you don't. I rented a car from Lotte car rental in Jeju-do island and all the car rental places required International Driver's Permit. Luckily, I knew that before hand from research and got my license at local AAA office before I left the US. But if I hadn't, I would've been out of luck and rental car is essential to properly explore Jeju-do island. Something to keep in mind if you ever want to rent a car in South Korea.

One nice perk from Lotte car rental was that all their rental cars came with automatic free car damage coverage which I thought was nice. I still used my Chase Sapphire Reserve card for bonus rental damage coverage out of habit but it wasn't necessary.

Not surprising to see such a swing in prices. One thing to watch out for though: roadside assistance coverage - the budget companies, even when owned by the big names, are very skimpy on this.

A few years ago, we rented an SUV from Payless in SLC to go to Yellowstone. 3rd day in, we got a flat. They suggested we drive 300 miles, on a spare, to Glacier National Park to exchange the vehicle (instead of either paying for the tire repair or sending us a new tire). At least we got a tow truck to come out for free to put on the spare, as we would never have been able to get the flat off with the include shit tools. Got the tire repaired in a local town next day on our own dime, but got our money back on the repair and the roadside coverage after bitching at Payless.

Costco has given me consistent good deals.

Also a cab away from the airport to pickup in a slower office sometimes saves hundreds of dollars.
