Heroic Soldier Mourned By Community

(Scio, NY) AP 05/02/04 - A 22-year-old western New York soldier who threw himself between a grenade and his fellow Marines was honored Sunday at his funeral.

Corporal Jason Dunham died just over a week ago from wounds he sustained April 14 in Iraq with the Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, Kilo Company.

The squadron leader and machine gunner was commanding a vehicle check point near Karbala. An Iraqi got out of a car and turned to throw a grenade. Dunham put himself between the grenade and his men.

More than 1,500 people packed the high school gymnasium for Dunham's funeral in the Allegany County town of Scio. His casket was underneath a basketball hoop, where his father said he loved to be.

Though the story of Dunham's heroism had been told all over town, it still drew forth tears when Reverend Ron Sellers told it again in the gym. Friends remembered Dunham as someone who always tried his best.

God bless him and his family.
