Seems like DOTA has died off quite a bit since the release. Haven't touched HoN since beta but I'll give it a try. The game itself is just fine, it's the community that made it not worth buying.

I don't play this game, but DOTA and SC2 are completely different; I don't see why one would abandon this for SC2 unless they simply don't want to play a hero-focused game. Both are completely different.

Is there a DotA for SC2 yet? I know I saw one that was suposed to be in the map list in beta, but I never tried it and don't have retail. SC2 might be completely different, but DotA is still built on a strategy game engine and all the stand alone clones I've played still feel like they're in a strategy game engine. I personally think it'd be awesome to have one that played like diablo (the pacing/feel) but with all the things that make dota dota (opposing towns/lots of heroes with a few skills each/etc) maybe with towns being beefier/more monsters being sent... but I'm kind of going off on a tangent here.

The studio that made Heroes of Newerth also made a little known but excellent, kick-ass melee-style FPS called Savage 2 which is a huge amount of fun and it's FREE to download and play. It also has small RTS and RPG elements to it. I'd never heard of it until 7 months ago and now it's probably my top game. You can find populated servers for it 24/7. Check it out!

HoN is dying, if my group of friends is any indication.
there was about 10-12 of us playing in free beta.
when it went retail, about 5 of us (myself not included as one of the 5) paid.
after SC2 was released, none of them play anymore. some have even gone back to WoW, lolz.

you just can't justify paying for a game that started out as a wc3 mod as a full standalone game.
the game gets stale very quick.
