Heroes of Might and Magic 3 on Win 7

HoMM 3 has to be the game I've played the most. I've reinstalled and played it every year since it came out, and I love it.

Problem is, it crashes all the time on Win 7, seemingly from a sound issue. I searched for about a week now, and can't find a fix, but do find alot of people having similar problems. Tried all compatibility modes and disabling things, tried running without sound (still crashed), and gettig to the point where I can't play because of crashing during long battles.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get this game to work on Windows 7?

I played it on my gf's laptop without issue on windows 7, so there is a good chance it is some driver issue you are having.

Do you have one of the versions of Windows that includes the XP virtual machine? HOMM3 is not a demanding game so it should run well in a VM.

I honestly know hardly anything about them, and couldn't tell you how to do this, but maybe if you could run a virtual machine, that would work? I imagine others will have better input.

Ok, I may be able to at least point you in right direction.

I actually just picked this up on gog. I have winxp. Works fine. But I was reading posts on gog and many have the same problem but I think someone posted a fix. It had to do with a registry setting from a previous install.

Anyway, check the gog forums if you got it there. If not it still may be worth a look.

Gl and hopefully you get it to work and we can discuss the game itself!

I can't seem to find the XP virtual machine (I own Windows 7 Ultimate), but found the MS website for it. Going to download it and try, thanks for the suggestion.

@JeffNY35
I checked out the Gog forums when I searched for this problem, and as far as I can tell, certain things work for certain people, but none of them worked for me. However, I didn't try the registry change; will see if I can find that info again and try it if the XP virtual machine fails.

Win7 Pro x64 - HoMM 3 from GoG works great for me. Bought it even though I have the original discs because a simple EXE install was so convenient.

That game was masterful. I liked Homm2, but 3 was pure gold. I can't believe the disgrace that was Homm4. Homm5 is sorta okay, but somehow isn't nearly as fun.

I've played it successfully on both Vista and Win7, 32 and 64 bit versions, with no issues. If in doubt though, a VM will be fine, that game is entirely 2d.

Does that GoG version have all the expansions also? Picked up a HoMM 1,2,3 collection with all expansions for $5, which replaced my discs for HoMM 2 and HoMM3 + expansions.

I think some games are just meant to be 2d.
