Hero VIII and PCIe SSD

HI,

Not sure if this has been asked before but here goes.

I have a Asus Maximus Hero VIII, 2 SSD's in RAID 0, 3 x 3TB HDD's in RAID 0, a 3TB for Storage and a Bu Ray RW.

The 2 x RAID 0 partitions and Blu Ray drive are on the Intel controller and the 3 TB drive is on the AS Media controller.

I'm seriously think of upgrading the 2 SSD's for a PCIe NVMe SSD. I know that if I went for a AHCI PCIe SSD that 2 of the SATA ports would be disabled but would going for NVMe disable 2 SATA ports as well as the PCIe 4x.

I could really do with the 2 extra SATA ports I would possible gain from upgrading to a PCIe SSD.

My PC consists of a i7 6700K, Corsair H100i v2, 16GB DDR4 3000, GTX 780 ti and x-fi titanium champ all house in Corsair 800D

Your post is confusing, are you asking if indeed the SATA ports would be disabled if you install a M.2? Yes.

Actually losing 2 sata ports only applies to Sata Express based M.2 drives, not PCIe based drives like the 950 Pro.
 
I thought that but wasn't entirely sure. Ordered the Samsung sm951 pcie NVMe 256gb last night anyhow as I figured "To hell with it, I'll just get one and go from there"!

If there is reason to use RAID 0 speed reading so I would recommend the Intel RST use it RAID1. Data are read simultaneously from both drives and data are protected. Capacity is of course only one disc.
 
Well, the drive arrived today. Took 2 mins to install and was recognised instantly. All SATA ports remained usable and none of the RAID configs were affected.

Windows installed seamlessly and took all of 3 mins to install off a USB 3.0 flash drive.

The reason for the RAID 0 setup initially was because when I bought the SSD's the maximum size you could get was 120GB and because I only installed programmes on c:\ it made more sense to combine the 2 drives in RAID 0 for the space.
